Gen Con 2014: Level Up!

Diversity, RFRA, and Inclusion at Gen Con

If you have watched or read the news over the past week, you have seen nationwide feedback on Indiana's RFRA legislation. Gen Con's CEO, Adrian Swartout, released a letter to the Governor of Indiana, preceding the legislation's signing, as well as two follow-up letters to our community on gencon.com with the intent of sharing our thoughts with the public. Simply put, Gen Con believes that diversity and inclusion are key to the success of our convention as well as to the state of Indiana.

Today, Indiana's General Assembly overwhelmingly passed an amendment to RFRA, signed by the Governor, that will remove RFRA's risk of discrimination or refusal of service statewide.
The amended law will reflect Indianapolis' own longstanding human rights ordinance which includes protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. With this amendment, no one can refuse you service under RFRA. Period. 

We believe this is an important first step, but is just that, a first step.

The conversation on RFRA legislation has created a great dialog in Indiana, across the country, and at Gen Con itself. We know we always can do more to support diversity at our show, and are discussing some exciting new ways to increase our support for all attendees. 
Given the great response by Visit Indy, the Indy Chamber, Mayor Greg Ballard, and the businesses of Indianapolis, we believe that all attendees will continue to receive the warm response that we have enjoyed for more than a decade. We won't stop pushing for more diversity and inclusiveness in Indiana, and we will include new concepts and partnerships into our preparations for Gen Con 2015. 

Thank you for your feedback during this discussion! Many representatives from Indy also have asked us to express their gratitude to you for your overwhelming outreach and support. Your voice has been heard in Indiana, and Indy is excited to show you its appreciation for your support. We will continue to look for exciting new ways to improve Gen Con and our attendees' experience.


Gen Con 2015 Official Beer Name Finalists

Thousands of names were submitted for the 4th Annual beer naming contest for Sun King's Official Beer of Gen Con 2015. We've reviewed the top names with Sun King to make sure that they can be used for the official brew, and now, have selected the five finalists! This beer, a Golden Ale, will join Gen Con lore as have the previous beers- the Ale of Destiny, Flagon Slayer, and the Froth of Khan.

First Three Marketing Fellowship Award Winners

Each year, Gen Con chooses six applicants from its Entrepreneurs' Avenue to receive Marketing Fellowships. These fellowships provide a booth upgrade, as well as complimentary marketing messages in the Program Book and newsletters. Gen Con selects these companies based on pitches submitted by the exhibitors that highlight their products as well as their plan to deliver a great experience to attendees. Today, Gen Con will announce the first three recipients and next week, we will publicize the final three chosen. Fellowship winners are not listed in a predetermined order. 
 

Marketing Fellowship Winner #1: The Broken Token

The Broken Token designs, creates, and sells accessories, boxes, and organizers for table top games. Their goal is to help you get your favorite games to the table faster, then stored away quickly so you can move on to the next. Their organizers are custom designed for optimum use of space within the game’s retail box. When possible, they consolidate the space within the box to accommodate expansions. 
 
They're licensed with many of your favorite game publishers, and are always working on the next product. They won’t rest until every little baggie finds a new purpose in life. Customers not only say that set-up and clean-up are faster, but their favorite games are getting to the table more often, too. They call that a win-win-win situation! You’ve got games. They’ve got solutions. Let them organize your games and simplify your game night!

Marketing Fellowship Winner #2: Indie Game Alliance 

The Indie Game Alliance is a guild of more than 200 independent tabletop designers and publishers on six continents. IGA offers opportunities to its members that they might not be able to access on their own. The Alliance maintains a 150-member volunteer team that runs events at conventions and game stores, including demos and organized play events. IGA also provides retail distribution services to its members and sells games at conventions, and also offers assistance with Kickstarter campaigns and fulfillment for its members.

At Gen Con 2015, the Indie Game Alliance will sell games and distribute Kickstarter rewards from its booth, as well as host demos and signing events from its member designers. Look for IGA's events to try out the latest games from exciting new publishers – before they even make it to Kickstarter! If you have interest in joining the Alliance as a designer, publisher or volunteer, the “Introduction to the Indie Game Alliance” event will give you all the information you need. Marketing Fellowship Winner #3: Tuesday Knight Games 

Tuesday Knight Games is the creator of Two Rooms and a Boom! It’s the party game of hidden roles that is ranked #4 game OF ALL TIME by Shut Up and Sit Down. A single game with 6-to-30 players can be played within 15 minutes. There are more than 70 unique characters in the base game, so all players can have their own unique role to play. No moderator is necessary. And unlike any other hidden role game, players can actually share their cards with other players to prove their loyalty.
