Achieving equity for all women in the workplace through education, advocacy and information

Tell Us What You Think

Welcome to the second issue of Step Into Our Shoes, a newsletter focused on the people, programs and activities of BPW/St. Petersburg-Pinellas! (Click here to read the first issue)

Since 1966, our local organization (LO) has worked diligently to be the equity champion for all women in the workplace. In 2014, we continue to carry out BPW's mission through programming, events and activities that address our personal, professional and political pillars.

Building on this year's "Be Relevant" theme, we want to know what our members think. By completing the BPW Member Survey, you will help us deliver BPW offerings in the way you want to receive them. The results will become a vital tool in helping BPW remain relevant to our members.

You can take the survey in one of two ways:
Thank you in advance for taking the time to help us discover what matters to you!

"Why It Still Matters: LGBT Issues in the Workplace"
Thursday, June 5, 2014
11:30 a.m., Networking; 12-1 p.m., Meeting & Lunch
Lara Shelton, President, L5 Express

This spring, the Florida Businesses for a Competitive Workforce coalition pushed for passage of the Florida Competitive Workforce Act which would add anti-discrimination protection based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression to state laws. Unfortunately, the bi-partisan supported measure died in both chambers without a hearing for the seventh straight year. In honor of LGBT Pride month, small business owner Lara Shelton will share her perspective on the traditional business community's support of LGBTQ-owned businesses and/or their LGBTQ employees.

"St. Petersburg Then and Now"
Thursday, June 19, 2014

11:30 a.m., Networking; 12-1 p.m., Meeting & Lunch
Monica Kile,  Executive Director, St. Petersburg Preservation

Have you ever wondered about the history of the green benches in Williams Park? Do you know how the May and October Music & Movies in the Park got started? Do you know why St. Pete Preservation exists? Monica Kile, former board member and current executive director of St. Pete Preservation, will give us the answers.

Black Women Equal Pay Day Event

Florida ranks 35th in the nation for the lowest pay for Black women. To observe the fact that a Black woman working full-time year round typically makes on average only 64.5 cents for every dollar a white man earns, past BPW/St. Petersburg-Pinellas president Cynthia Jenkins co-coordinated the Inaugural Black Women Equal Pay Coalition social held at The Manhattan Casino on May 12. Look for the second annual event in 2015!

WeWill Tampa Bay

Speakers and panelists included Rebecca Sive, author of Every Day Is Election Day: A Woman's Guide to Winning Any Office; Adam Smith, Tampa Bay Times political columnist; and former and current elected women officials.

Be Relevant in 2014-15

What can we do to set BPW apart this year? Be relevant.
Authenticity – We will strengthen what we do best. Mastery – We will be mission driven in all that we do. Empathy – We will diversify our reach, way of thinking, audiences and partnerships. Action – We will communicate, collaborate and connect to further our influence.
