Over a decade ago the bestselling business fable “Who moved my cheese” told the story of how we need to accept that change is inevitable and beyond our control. The European Union’s frantic efforts to avert a Eurozone meltdown was closely followed in SA.  Europe is a major trading partner of South Africa and their crisis could have a major impact on SA corporate earnings. As 2011 is drawing to a close, we feel quite sure that the wonderful fable of the mice searching for cheese in the maze was written for the times we are finding ourselves in... so we need to stop wondering why things are the way they are, keep our heads down and start looking for the new cheese.

Success in business, entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership depends on the ability to push the boundaries, understand the business territory and focus on clients like never before. With this in mind, Harvard Business School professor Deepak Malhotra offers a quite interesting perspective. “I Moved your cheese” reminds us that we underestimate our abilities to help shape our business future and deal with the constraints we face.

Despite all the challenges of 2011, People’s Dynamic Development was again blessed and participated with some longstanding clients in turn key projects. We have also established some new and meaningful business relationships. Please allow us to share some highlights.

Our unique philosophy and approach to training was again very successful. Our core interventions; mentorship training, Vukani, Synergy,  as well as programmes from PDD Innovation, Coaching, the GPS powered team building have again proved to be highly promoted interventions. Clients that we would like to thank this year include: Basil Read, BMW, CSIR, Council for Geoscience, Deloitte Consulting Department of Defence, Engen Oil,  Eskom, FNB Easy Banking, Forever Resorts, Hudson & Knight Imperial Logistics, Kumba, Lonmin, Murray& Robberts, Momentum, Plessey,  Public Investment Corporation SC Johnson, Senwes, Xstrata, Sanlam Investments Management (SIM), Sanlam Private Investments (SPI), Atlas Copco & Medupi JV.

We have been approached by ASTD international press to consider a revised edition for international release. New chapters on crucial conversations between mentors and their mentees and how to mentor up and down the generations will be included. Since its first release in 2006, the book has sold more than 7000 copies in South Africa alone and the new insights into profitable mentoring relationships will hopefully assist countless prospective mentors, business leaders, teachers and parents. Andre van Rensburg
The USA office has seen the light during the last part of 2011 and we are very excited about how we are received by the business community. A few highlights since our inception in the USA are as follows:
• Andre J. van Rensburg has been invited to present a keynote address about Synergy at the Prudential Global Conference in Orlando Florida in March 2012. He will also present at the Century 21 Global Conference in New Orleans later in the same month.
• The principles of the Synergy model have international application. We have implemented a number of trial sessions and have offered formal sessions with medical practices, real estate companies and banking organizations.  We are very encouraged by the reception of these organizations. We also believe that 2012 will build incredible momentum for 2013.
• PDD will present the principles of the Synergy model in applications with the restaurant industry and been making inroads with the restaurant association in the USA. The critical nature of teamwork in a restaurant has been recognized and we are in deep conversation to roll out a program for the members during 2012.
Andre has received a substantial amount of media exposure in the last few months:

• He has been invited to become a member of the Realtors Signature Series Speakers Bureau.  This prestigious group of speakers is by invitation and is considered to be specialists in their respective areas.
•  Andre as a senior instructor for the CCIM Institute was honored as the ‘2011 CCIM Instructor of the Year – Introduction to Commercial Real Estate by the CCIM Institute’, the governing body of the largest commercial real estate network in the world. CCIM instructors are practicing commercial real estate professionals who relate course concepts to real-world business questions – internationally accepted as the most challenging and valuable education in commercial real estate. Through dedicated education and training, they teach methodologies that propel CCIM students ahead of the competition. This annual award is bestowed upon a CCIM senior instructor who has earned the highest instructor ratings by industry professionals who attend designation classes.

Employment Equity

The employment equity front this year has been full of events. The proposed amendments are looming with substantive increases in fines to 2 to 10% of your annual turnover and the 11'th annual report, as released in August this year, focused on trends involving the first four upper occupational levels, i.e. top management, senior management, professionally qualified and skilled levels. According to this report, this is where designated groups are most under-represented. For instance, in top management, Blacks are still vastly underrepresented with a marginal growth of 1.4% since 2006. The Minister clearly voiced his disappointment with private business industries and we can clearly see how the Department of Labour is increasing its reviews of employers and are clamping down on them if they are not complying with the analysis, consulting, planning and reporting requirements of the Employment Equity Act. The new proposed amendments of the EEA will also see a spike in unfair discrimination cases as certain income earners will be entitled to refer disputes to the CCMA for arbitration to make the process cheaper and more accessible to low income earners. At PPD Innovation we can assist employers with audit and compliance to review orders, setting up or getting your EE forums off the ground, consultation and analysis processes or drafting your employment equity plan or reports. We also have an exciting Vukani program to assist with effectively integrating your Affirmative Action candidates into your business, as part of your retention and training strategies!
