May 2013 market news

Market Opens for the season on Thursday May 2.

After a chilly start in April, we've finally got some weeks of warmer Spring-like weather. Meanwhile back at your market members' farms, we've been starting seedlings and growing veggies.

The market is open every Monday and Thursday from May Day to Halloween each year, except for the Monday holidays.

This year Linda of High Lonesome Farm from Harmony & Canaan tells us that she'll be attending market on both Mondays and Thursdays this year. In the past she has chosen one or the other day to attend market to the disappointment of several of her customers. So look for Linda, or her daughter Angela, to be at market on both days this year. She'll have some overwintered potatoes as well as vegetable and flower seedlings, hanging baskets and her quick breads, cookies and doughnuts. Have you tried Linda's doughnuts yet? They are really good.

Snakeroot Organic Farm will once again be bringing in spinach, spicy greens and baby lettuce to market on the market's opening day and well into May. We'll also have a wide selection of garden seedlings of veggies that can be immediately put into your garden, starting with onions, leeks, shallots, Brussels sprouts, chard, broccoli, and cabbages. As the season warms, we'll be bringing in the heat loving plants as well.

Snakeroot is having a great lupine year, and we'll be offering spring dug second year plants at $6/pot or $20 for 4 pots. Once they begin to blossom the price will go up to $8/pot and $20 for 3 pots, but then you'll be able to pick your favorite colors.

As we did last year, Tom will be at Monday's market and Lois will be at Thursday market.

New Market Members

We'll have two new members at market this year, although neither of them may be at market first thing in the season.

Sonia Acevedo and Jeffrey Black of Hide and Go Peep Farm on Route 100 south will be offering duck and chicken eggs, goose and duck meat as well as seedlings and herbs. They also offer chicks, ducklings and goslings, and have a unique meat and egg CSA. They are committed to humanely raising their animals and consider them "working partners" on their farm. Sonia loves talking about waterfowl, so if you've ever wondered about them, she's the person to ask. This will be their first year attending any market, so stop at their stand to welcome them!

Mossbraker Farm is a brand new vegetable farm operating independently out of the Balfour Farm on the Webb Road. Cory Suzuki and Hannah Brilliant will be growing veggies and flowers for bouquets, as well as bringing to market bulk items for canning and storage.

Taste of the Market

HealthySV's Taste of the Market days went so well last year that they are expanding the program this year. They plan to be at market on both Mondays and Thursdays from June to September. The folks from Taste of the Market buy in-season foods from the market vendors, then prepare great tasting, simple to prepare dishes from them and offer samples and recipes at their stand.

Pick up some recipes, watch them prepare their dishes, and discuss the nutritional value of each weekly meal. They will show you that cooking from scratch can be creative, healthy and fun.
