My Best Birth Newsletter

May 19, 2010

Dear  <<First Name>>,

It's been two years since we released "The Business of Being Born" and a year since we published Your Best Birth and launched mybestbirth.com.  Every day we hear another birth story from a mom who was inspired to explore her birthing options and transformed by the experience.

More women are looking for natural alternatives, but unfortunately recent developments seem to be shutting down their options at an accelerated speed.

Just in the last few weeks, midwives and the institutions that support them seem to be facing even more closures and challenges.  We hope these are isolated incidents and do not reflect a larger trend, but it’s disheartening.

We encourage you to stay vocal on these issues and, as always, are so thankful for your support!

Warmest,

Ricki & Abby

St. Vincent's Hospital Closes, A Crisis for Home Birth in NYC

St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City recently closed it's doors, leaving many of its hospital-based midwives with nowhere to deliver and the majority of the city’s home birth midwives without a collaborating hospital.  No other hospitals in the city will agree to provide back-up for the midwives  Women in NYC have essentially lost their reproductive right to choose where they give birth.  Please click here to read more from The Guardian about this travesty, and click here to find out what you can do to help change it.

San Diego OBGYN Who Supports Natural Birth Wrongfully Suspended

As of Friday May 7, Dr. Robert Biter's privileges to deliver at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas have been suspended. The hospital refuses to give a reason, and Dr. Biter is legally unable to comment at this time. We know that Dr. Biter has a clean record and that this is a very unfortunate situation.

Dr. Biter is a Board Certified, capable obstetrician gynecologist, who is famous in the community for his dedication to his patients and commitment to natural childbirth. Dr. Biter is a physician who truly cares about his patients and respects their birth plans, and now hundreds of pregnant women are forced to find another care provider.  "The impression we are left with is that the hospital is actively working to create barriers for women who wish natural birth and a full range of childbirth options," -- Claudia Breglia, President, California Association of Midwives.

On Friday, May 14, over 500 supporters rallied for Dr. Biter in front of Scripps Memorial Hospital, Encinitas, CA, including Ricki Lake and the founder of Pregnancy Awareness Month, Anna Getty.

You can help by signing the online petition to reinstate Dr. Biter, and by spreading the word. Please visit the Bring Biter Back website for more information.
