Mmmm.... because we love you we're serving up two tasty new artists in the Hatch, who have so much creative flair that, on second thoughts, we're actually gonna have to ask you not to eat them. We kinda want them to stick around. Yes, they're shiny and their work looks delicious with all that tasty colour on it, but you can't have your Sophie Blackhall-Cain and Mekel and eat them, too. Welcome aboard, guys!
Jacky Winter Welcomes Sophie Blackhall-Cain and Mekel
May 12, 2014 10:14 am
On this day, the twelfth of May in the year 2014, at approximately 10:15 am and 32 seconds, we welcome two new artists to the Jacky Winter nest. At the exact same second as we put them under the sentient Hogwarts artifact which magically turned up at JW headquarters, a species of bird in the Petroicidae family commonly known as the Jacky Winter will alight on a post in a paddock to waggle its tail and utter its distinctive ‘Peter-Peter’ call. By the time it has darted out from its perch to snatch at a flying insect, the Sorting Hat will have placed Sophie Blackhall-Cain and Mekel into the Hatch and been shoved back inside a box so that our resident Italian greyhound doesn’t eat it.
Now, won’t you be upstanding for Sophie Blackhall-Cain and Mekel? We are delighted to have these two talented artists aboard.
Sophie lives up in the mountain of Toowoomba with a menagerie of cats. After completing a non-creative degree, she made up for lost time by devoting herself 100 percent to illustration and design. She applied for the 2013 Lamington Drive residency and captivated us with her bright, splashy art. We can’t get enough of her. Sophie is particularly interested in editorial and children’s illustration and goes by the mantra that art should never be boring.
Mekel is a former graphic designer and current full-time illustrator. You’ve probably seen her work across Perth Fashion Festival, Wanderlust Festival, American Express and Urban Walkabout. It’s characterised by a keen eye for fashion and pops of bright watercolour. Mekel creates beautiful linework, whimsical fashion pieces and the rare canvas commission.
Like Willy Wonka, we shake them warmly by the hand, and welcome them to the chocolate factory. Their folios are live on our site and eagerly await your appraisal!
Luke Lucas created this fizzy typography for Schweppes new ‘Dry’ campaign. Based around how hard it is to define the taste, Luke had heaps of fun creating tons of typefaces for crazy words that are as hard to pronounce as Schweppes itself. Schweet!
The Easter break may be well and truly behind us, but we had to share this illustration that Stuart McLachlan was commissioned to create for the Coke Drive Program. Stuart’s the king of making big-city retro art and this poster features all his trademarks: billboard-style lettering, bold iconic styling and hand-painted flourishes. Plus, this piece was for a great cause – Coke encouraged people to drink responsibly over the Easter break by offering free soft drinks at participating venues. Cheers!
And that's your lot for this week. Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodbye til it be morrow,
