The opposite of horrid torments is happy triumphs, and we've had plenty of those here lately. Hayley Sparks managed to make us forget it's winter. Dem's some nice swimcaps. Sonia Kretschmar created a portrait of the Presets for Rolling Stone. Dat's some tasty synthesiser. Beci Orpin created the campaign artwork for MIFF. It's almost on us, people. And we delightedly welcomed a new artist, Sean Morris, into our roster of image-makers. Can't even deal with how awesome. Love y'all stacks. Like pancake stacks. Yours syrupily - jw.
Hayley Sparks created a photo essay called ‘The Bathers’, and while all the pictures are beautiful, we're particularly mesmerised by the floral swimming caps. Yes, those caps are made from FRESH FLOWERS. They're a little bit Anne Geddes, they're a little bit hippie chic. But what makes them super superb is the photography. We dare you not to ooh and aah over this gorgeous shoot.
JW Welcomes Sean Morris

We have taught the secret handshake to one more freemason – please put your hands together and give a round of applause to the wonderful, the incredible, the not-so-shrouded-in-mystery Sean Morris. Originally born in Perth, Sean is currently based in Melbourne. He works across a wide range of mediums, creating comic-inspired digital drawings, pencils, watercolours, acrylics and the occasional aerosol mural. His artworks are like a special-order blend of grotesque and beautiful – insider studies of outsider living, and high-brow tributes to alleged low-culture. Sean has had solo exhibitions in London, Madrid, Melbourne and Perth, and participated in approximately fifty group exhibitions. He curated three group exhibitions under the ‘Magic Weirdos’ tagline in Perth, London and Melbourne between 2012 and 2014, and has been featured in publications over five continents. You may recognise his style from The New York Times, Mambo, Addict, The Portland Mercury, Little White Lies magazine and Wooden Toy Quarterly. We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome him aboard and to make subtle use of our secret handshake in public situations. Check out Sean’s folio here.
Follow us! We’re taking you to our happy place, away from the depths of winter and over to the seaside for Hayley Sparks’ latest editorial story, ‘The Bathers’.
Hayley brought an incredible group of talent together to create these exquisite photographs. The shoot was styled by Stefanie Ingram with floral styling (yes, those bathing caps are made from FRESH FLOWERS) by Jardine Hansen and models hailing from Bambini Talent Group.
Do you feel warm? Do you feel cosy? Well, thank Hayley Sparks! Head over to Hayley’s online folio to see more of her work.
Sonia Kretschmar created this striking illustration of Australian dance-punk duo the Presets to accompany an article in Rolling Stone. It matches the nice little playlist the magazine prepared for its readers; a veritable army of ’80s synths. Sonia has long held the mantra that art shouldn’t necessarily be confined to galleries, given that images are an integral part of our culture. It makes sense that she’d create an image intended to send intrepid readers on a synth odyssey.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, tickets to Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) are now on sale, and our beloved Beci Orpin created the festival’s campaign artwork. In a unique collaboration, our crafty lady of the arts collaborated with MIFF to not only produce the pièce de résistance but to sign some limited edition posters as well. Click here to check out how you can win your very own Beci Orpin-signed poster and read her cheeky Q+A.
