You haven't reeeaaally seen a green-eyed monster if you haven't seen Andrew Joyner's illustration of Caroline Crocodile glaring jealously at her new baby bother yet. Andrew's most recent picture book collaboration cleaned up big at this year's Children's Book Council of Australia Awards. It's also been shortlisted for the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards so snap it up for any kiddies in your life. In other JW news this week, Maricor/Maricar hand-built fruit molecule sculptures, fluorescent motorised plants, bouncy ball ice-cream and exploding candy bombs for the University of Sydney; our intrepid photographer James Newman went up into the Dandenong Ranges to shoot a bunch of professional athletes in action; and Luke Lucas created a provocative neon type for Durex’s 30-nights-of-nookie challenge. Did you know that Mimi Leung's illustration of 'Tony Abbott, Constipated' has been shortlisted in the 2014 Create Design Awards? We're proud as hell. Love always - jw.

James Newman shot a new campaign for 3Zero, a running and outdoor sports shop that believes in winning strength, technical skill, known reliability and good aesthetics. And that's just when talking about photographers! James delivered the goods on this awesome shoot. Check out the images after the jump.

Around Town

Andrew Joyner for ‘The Swap’

Aug 25, 2014 10:18 am

Last year Andrew Joyner illustrated a gorgeous picture book, The Swap, and it’s just been unveiled as the winner of Book of the Year (Early Childhood category) at the Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards. Written by Jan Ormerod and published by Little Hare, it’s about a young crocodile called Caroline, who has a VERY dribbly baby brother. Caroline hates all the attention he gets so she trots him off to the Baby Shop to swap him for another model. Of course, a baby panda brother, baby elephant brother and twin baby tiger brothers all turn out to be even worse than her actual brother, so Caroline learns a thing or two about jealousy and love.

Andrew’s illustration style matches the story text perfectly, and his portrayal of facial expressions and body language leads us to believe that perhaps he has spent more time with green, scaly creatures than he lets on. Either way, it’s just as good as Too Many Elephants in This House, and you can print colouring-in pages off Andrew’s website here. It’s even been shortlisted for the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards (Children’s Book category) so cross your fingers and stay tuned!

MaricorMaricar for the University of Sydney

Aug 22, 2014 11:48 am

Maricor/Maricar recently directed two videos through In The Thicket for Sydney agency The Monkeys to celebrate a new research centre launched by the University of Sydney. It’s a little different to their usual embroidery work, but just as elaborate. The clips are an enthralling amalgamation of stop-motion animation, live action shoots and fruit molecule sculptures. The girls hand-built the props and co-directed the series with Mel Pragrassen. Wanna check out some fluorescent motorised plants, bouncy ball ice-cream and exploding candy bombs? Hit play on Sweetfighter and Robocrop down below.

James Newman for 3Zero

Aug 21, 2014 11:01 am

James Newman went up into the Dandenong Ranges to shoot a bunch of pro athletes in action for 3zero‘s new product range. 3zero is a running and outdoor sports shop specialising in trail running, road running, minimal shoes, CrossFit, hydro packs, digital training products and nutrition. They champion lightweight, strong, functional and innovative designs that are proven to have winning strength, technical attributes, durability and aesthetics. Clearly they also believe in having winning photographers on board for their advertising campaigns  we love James’ work for this shoot.

Luke Lucas for Durex

Aug 19, 2014 11:08 am

Our life-blood runs in neon, and so does the neon typeface that Luke Lucas developed for Durex’s 30-night challenge, launching on September 1st. Luke worked with Momentum Worldwide in Sydney to complete the type and it’s certainly very provocative. See what we did there? You can find out more about the challenge and sign up here.

And that's your lot for this week. Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodbye til it be morrow,
