Wanna hear an embarrassing story? Up until now, the date has still been stuck on 2013 for this newsletter. We've been living in the past. Danger zone. Mind blown. Our inner existentialist is flipping out. Last week (and we do mean 7 days ago, not 7 days and 12 months ago), we expressed our love for you by giving away tickets to Supergraph(which was fab, by the way). We admired Nigel Buchanan's slick cover art for a new quarterly magazine, and we stepped into an enchanted world where little girls bloom like garden roses. We also invited you to sit beside us on a loveseat and we dared you to attend a book launch. If we could effectively headbutt the screen to go back in time, we'd do it all again. Love always - jw.
Hayley Sparks only moved from America to Australia last year but she's already carving out a unique niche in the SEA scene thanks to her ethereal lighting and editorial style. She recently shot a series of sweet, whimsical portraits which depict young girls as garden roses with the help of Sydney stylist Lydia-Jane Saunders. Click through for the rest of the images - they'll make you yearn for places you've never been.
Guy Shield for Penguin Books Australia
Feb 17, 2014 01:00 pm
Guy Shield created the cover art for Penguin Book‘s latest exciting, action-packed adventure series for young readers. The ‘Do You Dare?’ series transports readers back to colonial times and takes a frenzied romp through Australian history. Better yet, the ‘Do You Dare?” book launch will be held next Sunday, 23 February at the Readings bookshop in Hawthorn. Do you dare attend?
If you’ve ever wondered what a ‘love seat’ is but been too tentative to ask, Georgia Perry is here to demystify you with her hand-painted design for Freedom Furniture. Georgia was one of four local artists to quirkily customise a limited edition bench set for their Valentine’s Day giveaway. Happy Valentine’s Day y’all - we hope you’re covered in pink sprinkles.
Hayley Sparks created these sweet, whimsical images and lent a whole new meaning to the term ‘flower girls’ with the assistance of Sydney stylist Lydia-Jane Saunders. The creative concept was to present the girls as fresh garden roses with a deliberate nod to the ephemeral and fleeting nature of childhood. We want to climb inside this fairytale and live there forever.
There’s a new quarterly mag on the block and it’s as rich in illustration as a literal reading of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man*. Eight by Eight focuses predominantly on European football and aims to thrill the graphic designer inside. Nigel Buchanan brilliantly illustrated the cover for Issue 2. He shoots, he scores!
*Is that analogy confusing because it’s artistic, or artistic because it’s confusing?
Oooooooh, do we have a treat for you! We’re giving away a double pass to Ben Sanders’ Masterclass at Supergraph this weekend. Ben will be teaching kids how to capture the likeness of people they’ve always known, without the assistance of Madame Tussauds™ wax, Egyptian techniques or cryonics. Participants should bring along a photo of 3 relatives or friends – this class is best suited to artists aged 8-12. All you have to do to win is shoot an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line ‘I’ve an Uncle Ivan’ and Bob’s your, um, uncle (well, maybe). Check out Ben‘s creative process below!
And that's your lot for this week. Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodbye til it be morrow,
