BIG news. BIG, BIG! news. Daniel Emma are back and this time the design duo have turned their hand to making BIG! things. Details of their upcoming BIG! show - featuring furniture, lighting and tabletop paraphernalia - at Lamington Drive listed below. Pencil it in firmly because the exhibition will also showcase the results of Daniel Emma's table and bench project with Tait and feature two special workshops whereupon guests can illustrate Daniel Emma's still life scene and participate in workshops with our own Beci Orpin and Madeline Stamer. What else has been going on, you ask? Well, Sean Fennessy sought to find out what gives Collins Street its ineffable charm through his camera lens, we encouraged you to get into The Big Draw (and it's not too late!), and Georgia Perry showed us her balls. We liked them, a lot. You probably will too. Love always - jw.
Design duo Daniel Emma have a reputation that precedes them and a loyal following across the seven seas. They're presenting their first major Australian show at Lamington Drive from 6 – 21 December and to celebrate, we'll be running a couple of special programs featuring Beci Orpin, Madeleine Stamer, and a cavalcade of drawing materials. Daniel Emma at Lamington Drive
Oct 28, 2013 12:15 pm
Daniel Emma are presenting their first major exhibition in Australia at our devoted gallery space, Lamington Drive, from 6 – 21 December. The two design grads were named the kids to watch by Wallpaper* Magazine and lauded as the “most promising talent” by 100% Design London. They were awarded the Bombay Sapphire Australian Design Discovery award and have put on shows in Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, London and New York. They’re kind of a big deal, you know? So it’s fitting that their exhibition is called BIG! and will feature big things in a still life format: think furniture, light fittings and tabletop paraphernalia.
Inspired by Daniel Emma’s exploration of the concept “big”, Lamington Drive will be running two workshops alongside their show. The first workshop will allow visitors to illustrate Daniel Emma’s still life scene and pin it to the gallery walls, creating a unique spread of drawn interpretations. The second workshop will feature our own Beci Orpin and Madeleine Stamer, who will demonstrate how to work within the still life format. Want to know more? Go here, and make sure you put the opening night of Thursday, 6 December into your diaries pronto.
Published by Random House and penned by Deborah Kelly, ’The Bouncing Ball‘ is a new children’s book illustrated by the gorgeous and gifted Georgia Perry. It follows the adventures (and misadventures) of a small red ball which bounces through colourful fields and cities looking for new kids to play with. Georgia’s bold, graphic illustrations are a perfect match for the fun storyline, and the book is available both online and at friendly bookstores across Australia. Check out the behind-the-scenes footage of Georgia having a ‘ball’ and working on her illustrations below!
Happy Hump Day! (awkward segue into explanation that this is actually a nickname for Wednesday, not an invitation to be inappropriate). Welcome to the most amazing giveaway you will find on the internet for at least the next half hour. It’s ‘Big Draw’ month around the world and exciting interactive exhibitions are transforming venues across the Yarra Ranges in Melbourne. Unsuspecting gallery walls have been revamped by large-scale collaborative drawing installations and 3D streetscapes have risen from humble cardboard heaps in the Campaign for Drawing. As part of the festivities, The Big Draw Talks is set to offer informal advice about how to survive as an illustrator this Saturday, 26 October at the The Memo in Healesville. Our darling Kelly Thompson and Mimi Leung will be speaking, as well as internationally renowned cartoonist Mark Wright and performance drawer Zhen Chew, so go! We’re giving the first two people to email firstname.lastname@example.org using the subject line ‘I draw therefore I… want freebies’ a free double pass.
SEA‘s intrepid photographer Sean Fennessy recently set about capturing the essence of Collins Street and its surrounding laneways for an ‘Australia on Collins’ campaign. The campaign, currently taking place both in Australia and offshore, aims to showcase what gives Melbourne’s traditional main street that certain je ne sais quoi. That’s how they refer to it in the so-called ‘Paris End’ of Collins Street, anyway, and Sean’s photos merely confirm the grandeur of its heritage buildings and labyrinthine maze of laneways. Melbourne was crowned the globe’s most liveable city – again – in August, and Sean’s photos reflect the rich history and cultural heart of its premier street.
And that's your lot for this week. Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodbye til it be morrow,
