I was going to write an entire newsletter intro about the sheer injustice of state-specific public holidays, but all I can think about is the new Watchmen TV show and how good it is. It's really good! It was either that or bidets, and honestly I don't know if we really know each other that well yet to go there just yet.
So yeah, me and Damon Lindelof have a very complicated history. On the one hand, he made what might be one of the best TV shows of my generation, The Leftovers. On the other hand, he was also partially responsible for the complete and utter debacle which was Lost.
I can't overstate how deeply into Lost I was while it was on. Take the following example. I have an *incredibly* bad memory, especially when it comes to good things (thanks, evolution!). Therefore, when something good happens to me, I try to specifically say to myself 'REMEMBER THIS GOOD THING! GOOD THINGS DO HAPPEN!' It's kind of like that core memory thing from Inside Out, but much weirder.
So anyway, I was in my mid 20's, the prime of my life. I was dating someone I was very into, and just finished a hockey game and riding home on my motorcycle. Wind in my hair and all that other cliched mid-20s nonsense. The icing on the cake though? I was coming home to watch a new episode of Lost and I remember thinking 'Could life actually get any better?' (maybe? still not sure - will come back to this one)
So with that in mind I deliberately constructed this core memory of that moment, which I will probably think about on my death bed, completely ignoring the fact that the writers had no idea what they were doing the whole time and the final episode was an enormous slap in the face to me, someone who not only has etched the show into his core memory but also ordered a full DHARMA initiative jumpsuit from eBay fully embroidered with my name and fake position and station on The Island (Workman, the Pearl, in case you're wondering). I even had the god damned shoes to go with it, courtesy of one Sonny Day.
So yeah, it goes deep. And I still have the jumpsuit.
I wasn't sure I could recover from being so badly mistreated as a loyal fan but yeah, I think Watchmen makes up for it. So far. And only just.
Wow, that was a bit longer and more intimate than I thought I'd be getting this week. Maybe should have done the bidets after all? Too late now, got to get a move on!
Until next week, scroll away for the JW goodness you really came here for.
