Come closer. Closer still. Closer. It's cold outside and we have tales to warm the cockles of your heart. In case you were wondering, art makes your heart beat faster and it's probably also the origin of that "warm and fuzzy" feeling in the icy chamber of your heart. Let's get cosy: three JW artists have exhibitions coming up. Doesn't that make you feel nice and toasty? Twin sisters Maricor and Maricar will adorn the walls of Koskela with abstract embroideries and patchworked textiles inspired by their stay in London. Brothers Keelan and Ben Ashton-Bell will present a joint show at Gallery #9, and the wonderfully whimsical Emma Leonard will present her new works for No Vacancy. Feeling warmish yet? We've included some links to more smoking-hot art to peruse with that hot chocolate down below. We're sure they'll warm you up in no time, but be careful carrying around heated beverages, ok? We wouldn't want you to scald yourself before Field Trip. Love always - jw.
Sean Fennessy took this photo from a vintage luxury train speeding through Malaysia to Bangkok for AFAR Magazine. Wish you were there?

Rail travel has never looked so good. Sean Fennessy recently shot the three-day ride from Singapore through Malaysia and onto Bangkok via the luxurious Eastern and Oriental Express for AFAR Magazine. His pictures perfectly evoke the surreal experience of riding the rails through a blur of jungle and hot forest. These are portraits of a changing landscape taken aboard a train renowned for its old-school dinner services, polished brass and vintage fixtures. If you’d like to see more images from the AFAR series, you can check them out on Sean’s website.
Woo hoo! The 2013 Prime Minister’s Literacy Awards shortlists for fiction, poetry, non-fiction, Australian history, young adults fiction and children’s fiction have been announced. To be honest, we’re mostly interested in children’s fiction on this fine Friday afternoon, especially given the wholly delightful What’s the Matter, Aunty May? has made the cut. Written by Peter Friend and illustrated by multi-tasking wonderman Andrew Joyner, this cute story of a well-intentioned but spatially inept boy’s attempts to help his aunt with the housework is deliciously retro and decidedly heartening. Go on, you know you need some mid-arvo escapism – click here for more joy-filled illustrations.
The panoramic views from a high-rise London apartment gave twin sisters Maricor/Maricar the inspiration for their latest body of work. Based on photos and drawings they produced of London Fields, an exhibition of their abstract embroideries and patchworked textiles will take place at Koskela from 6th July – 18th August. We’re breathlessly swooning over the sneak peeks of the work – if you are lucky enough to be in Sydney for opening night, enjoy some drinks and nibbles with the girls for us. BYO smelling salts.
Not too long ago, in a neighbourhood not far from you, Stuart McLachlan combined forces with DDB Melbourne to create a phenomenal set of illustrations for the Original Juice ‘Tastefully Original’ campaign. His luscious lines and vintage-style lettering caught the attention of juice-swillers and shop-fillers everywhere, so when DDB needed an illustrator for Hertz Travel Poster series, they knew Stuart was “the one”. Stuart lovingly hand-painted each car-rental scenario on the riddle-inspired posters and we are proud as punch of him (and a little bit intimidated by his prowess). Keep an eye out for his gorgeous work around town but remember to look out for rental cars – we hear they’re on the increase.
Roll up, roll up, for the Sydney extravaganza otherwise known as Field Trip. Under the dazzling stage lights of the Monkey Baa Theatre, watch Chris Nielsen, Georgia Perry, Kate Banazi, WBYK and Heath Killen juggle creative balls without dropping a single one. Marvel at their linguistic acrobatics as they cover a wide variety of industry-specific issues and wonder at the death-defying acts of courage required from any nubile creative today.* You won’t believe your eyes, but we encourage you to bring them anyway, as they might come in handy for the panel discussion entitled ‘Mixed Business’ which will feature a selection of these marvellous presenters and our very own Jeremy Wortsman. Check out the videos from last year here and don’t forget to book early – these tickets sell like hot popcorn and corn dogs.
Feast your eyes on these fierce kicks! Thanks to Sonny and Biddy at Webuyyourkids, Sneaker Freaker have a sabre-toothed poster to plug their much-hyped Tassie Devil NB998s. Proudly named after the chunky Australian carnivore, these velvety purple numbers pay a respectful nod to the Solebox series of NB Devils and marks the tenth anniversary of Sneaker Freaker. We love the matching triangular fangs on the sneaker forefoot and the illustrated critter – high fives to Webuyyourkids, Sneaker Freaker and New Balance for such beautifully ferocious work!
