Important Reminders

1. Read the Member Handbook!!  Find a copy here          
2. Take ONLY the box with your name on it (the primary contact person for your share).
3.  Respect the guidelines of your pick-up site, as described in your Member Handbook.
4.  Carefully dismantle your farm box, and leave at your pick up site.  Any ripped tabs of your box, generally ruins the box and makes it unable to be reused.  Please use care and see the diagram in the Member Handbook on flattening your box.

A Word About Recipes: We used to provide a lot of recipes in our newsletter, but we found ourselves copying recipes off the internet.  Considering that everyone has access to the internet, it seemed not the best use of our time.  If you're uncertain what to do with a new item, do an internet search and you will find a plethora of recipes to choose from.  You can also purchase two wonderful cookbooks from FairShare CSA Coalition
  • Strawberries: It's peak week! Everyone received one pint from Monday's picking along with one or more from Wednesday's picking.  Use them up quickly as they are extremely perishable.  Store in refrigerator.
  • Bok Choi: Excellent in stir-fry.  Use both the greens and white stalks.  Store in refrigerator inside a plastic bag.   
  • Lovage: A potent Mediterranean herb.  A big plant with an even bigger flavor!  Use sparingly.  Store in plastic bag in refrigerator.
  • Swiss Chard: The stalks and leaves are edible.  Great steamed or sauteed.  Our favorite addition to omelets or scrambled eggs!  Keep in plastic bag in refrigerator.
  • Baby Turnips: Greens and turnips are edible.  Greens are excellent steamed with butter and salt/pepper.  Store greens separate from roots in plastic bag in refrigerator.  
  • Red  Radishes: Greens can be used the same as turnip greens. Store greens separate from roots in plastic bag in refrigerator.  
  • Salad Mix: While it was tripled washed, you'll want to wash it again to remove any remaining silt from the recent rains.  Keep in plastic bag in refrigerator until used.
  • Garlic Scapes (double shares only)  Just the beginning!  Entire scape is edible and has a mild garlic flavor.  Use as you would garlic.  Store in plastic bag in your refrigerator.

News From the Farm

I woke at 5:15 am this morning to the sounds of rumbling thunder.  My heart sank as I thought of the vine ripened strawberries that needed to be harvested today.  Wet berries will quickly rot in the field if they aren’t picked on time, making a mess of the patch and ruin the remaining berries on the vines.  But the rain also causes them to be splashed with mud and not hold very well for the consumer (you).  But by 10 am the rain had stopped and the wind picked up, helping to dry out the berries.  Six of our neighborhood Amish teenagers showed up for picking and withe the help of our regular crew members we were able to get through the entire patch in time to fill this week's boxes with several pints! 

While the berries aren’t quite as sweet as they were on Monday, due to the rain washing through them, they are still so incredibly tasty compared to berries shipped from California, Chile or Argentina.  Strawberries don’t continue to ripen once they are picked, so we pick them every-other-day to gather what has ripened.  Peak week is just about over, but you'll receive more next week.
The Strawberry Patch will be open for U-Pick:  Friday June 27 - Sunday, June 29th.  We will give more details in next week's newsletter.

Other news from the farm this week: 
  • The barn was primed and painting will begin once dry weather moves in!   
  • Nikki almost stepped on a cute spotted fawn while picking the lovage this week.  Scared the beegeezers out of her and gave us something to talk about during the muddy turnip harvest.
  • We received over 3 inches of rain in the last few days – everything is muddy, but well watered!

Bike the Barns Driftless

This spectacular fundraising bicycle tour travels through the forested hillsides and rolling farmland of the lovely Driftless area while raising awareness and membership for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Bike the Barns generates funding for the Coalition’s work, including the Partner Shares Program, a cost-share initiative to improve accessibility to fresh, local produce for limited-income families.

Participants in Bike the Barns Driftless will enjoy a scenic day of biking to local farms and eating artisan dishes prepared fresh, courtesy of Rooted Spoon Culinary.  The ride starts and ends in Viroqua, WI, and visits Ridgeland Harvest and Driftless Organics farms.
