A Word About Recipes: We used to provide a lot of recipes in our newsletter, but we found ourselves copying recipes off the internet.  Considering that everyone has access to the internet, it seemed not the best use of our time.  If you're uncertain what to do with a new item, do an internet search and you will find a plethora of recipes to choose from.  You can also purchase two wonderful cookbooks from FairShare CSA Coalition
  • Strawberries: Sadly the berries are winding down.  But we have lots to give this week!  Everyone is receiving pints from Monday's picking AND Wednesday's picking.  Use them up quickly as they are extremely perishable.  Store in refrigerator.  See details below about the Strawberry U-Pick this weekend!
  • Fennel: A Mediterranean vegetable popular to use on pizza and pasta dishes, though we use in cold pasta salads and cooked vegetable medley's.  Feathery leaves and bulb are edible, though we tend to use only the bulb.  Can be used raw or cooked.  Store separately in plastic bag in refrigerator. 
  • Red Mustard:  Despite our efforts of seeding the mustard then covering it with floating row cover to prevent insect damage, the little flea beetles with voracious appetites still peppered the leaves with their bites.  Alas, this wonder green is spicy and can be used raw in a salad or lightly cooked. Store in plastic bag in refrigerator.   
  • Baby Turnips: Greens and turnips are edible.  Greens are excellent steamed with butter and salt/pepper.  Store greens separate from roots in plastic bag in refrigerator.  
  • Lettuce - Green and/or Red Butterhead  We grew enough to have two weeks for everyone, but the deer have eaten most of it!  The photo above of our deer stand is where Mat is spending a lot of time in the early dawn hours and from dusk until dark, trying to get some control on the deer.  They are eating our next fennel planting, digging up beets, nibbling on younger lettuce plantings, and starting in on the potato, carrot and cucumber plants.  But this lettuce planting also had a lot of water running through it, creating some of the rusty brown marks on the bottom portions.  Just cut off bottom core to allow leaves to fall away.  Wash thoroughly, store in salad spinner or pat dry and store in plastic bag in refrigerator until used. 
  • Garlic Scapes:  Entire scape is edible and has a mild garlic flavor.  Use as you would garlic.  Store in plastic bag in your refrigerator.
  • Sugar Snap Peas!  The first harvest on our lovely first planting.  We'll have more next week.  The entire pod is edible, just snap the top stem end and slide the string off the pod prior to cooking/eating.  Leave in plastic bag in your refrigerator until used.  We cut up pods into 1/2 inch pieces and lightly cooked in a broth along with mustard leaves, garlic scapes and fennel then served over pasta. 
  • Radishes, French Breakfast: These are spicy!  Tops and roots are both edible.  Store greens separately from roots in plastic bags in refrigerator.
  • Cilantro: This first seeding germinated slowly in the cold spring weather, so just a small bunch for everyone.  Garnish your tacos with fresh cilantro and shredded lettuce!  Store in plastic bag in refrigerator until used.  Easily frozen by chopping into ice cube trays and covering lightly with water until frozen - place cubes into freezer bag for use later.

Important Reminders

1. If you have a friend picking up your share, please forward this email to them so they can read the Member Handbook - Find a copy here          
2. Take ONLY the box with your name on it (the primary contact person for your share).
3.  Respect the guidelines of your pick-up site, as described in your Member Handbook.
4.  Carefully dismantle your farm box, and leave at your pick up site.  Any ripped tabs of your box, generally ruins the box and makes it unable to be reused.  Please use care and see the diagram in the Member Handbook on flattening your box.

News From the Farm

This week has been very busy.  The sun is finally shining after last week's wet weather delayed many field projects.  But the weeds took advantage of the wet time and have jumped considerably in size!  Between the harvesting, trellising of tomatoes and another pea planting, mulching and mowing, and many days of work with the cultivator and hand hoes, the weeds are getting under control.  Now we desperately need to get caught up with planting and seeding in the field! 

We hope to see some of you at the farm this weekend.  Come take advantage of the Strawberry U-Pick and Bike the Barns!!  See below for more details on both.

Strawberry U-Pick

The patch will be open to u-pickers on Friday and Saturday June 27 and 28th from 9 am - 5 pm.  This informal u-pick opportunity is a chance to harvest your own berries and see the farm on foot.   We recommend bringing your own stroller or wagon for young children who can't walk more than 1 city block.   Don't forget to bring your own containers!  We ask you to be considerate of other pickers so everyone brings home some.

Bike the Barns Driftless

This spectacular fundraising bicycle tour travels through the forested hillsides and rolling farmland of the lovely Driftless area while raising awareness and membership for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Bike the Barns generates funding for the Coalition’s work, including the Partner Shares Program, a cost-share initiative to improve accessibility to fresh, local produce for limited-income families.

Participants in Bike the Barns Driftless will enjoy a scenic day of biking to local farms and eating artisan dishes prepared fresh, courtesy of Rooted Spoon Culinary.  The ride starts and ends in Viroqua, WI, and visits Ridgeland Harvest and Driftless Organics farms.
