Unfortunately you'll see some of those injuries on your tubers.  We sorted out the worst ones here at the farm, but you'll want to cut out the bad spots as they appear, and eat those first.
  • Roma Tomatoes & a few lingering slicers: 3 pounds Smalls; 6 pounds Standards; 12 pounds each Doubles. Enough to make a nice red sauce this week!
  • Sweet Corn: 2 ears Smalls; 5 ears Standards; 12 ears Doubles  With just a few ears, cut the kernels off the cob to add to tacos, soups, appetizer dips, etc. This is our last corn of the season, which typically means you'll find an ugly corn bore worm.  If you don't like to see the, cut off the tips of your corn as their entry point is through the corn silk.
COMING SOON: More Edamame Soybeans, Celeriac, Turnips, Carrots, Squash, Spinach and more!

News From the Farm

A Balancing Act

This week things weren't as balanced as we had planned.  The pepper numbers weren't accurate; the broccoli pieces were individually too heavy so our number of shares wasn't reached as expected; and the potatoes are sadly injured from our potato digger.  When things don't go as planned, we have to make adjustments.  The pepper numbers were adjusted so everyone received them; the broccoli went to only the Madison small shares and there will be more broccoli in other boxes; the worst of the potatoes were composted here at the farm but we still find what was packed for you to be edible once peeled and spots cut out.  Further, the lettuce we anticipated giving this week bolted in the hot, dry weather conditions.  As with all aspects of life, we adjust, compromise and come to a solution even when it's not what we planned on.  I guess we don't always get what we want.

We balanced the work week with harvest and other projects, a nice change from the harvest grind of July, August and September. We harvested the last tomatoes, cut the trellis and pulled the stakes.  We harvested the last of our cabbage, and the first ripe winter squash and pumpkins which we'll begin washing and giving to you soon.  And we continue to work on garlic trimming, onion topping, and irrigation continues.

As the farm continues to stay busy, we also try to balance it with our family needs - processing food for the winter, kid activities and now the return of homework and spelling tests!  Balance is hard for everyone, so we, like you, try our best and some days we do better at it than other days.

If you haven't already - mark your calendars for our last CSA gathering on Sunday, October 22.  More details to come!

Eat well and happy cooking everyone,
Mat & Cate
