Weekly shares and Leek EOW Group
Leeks lined up ready during the wash process.

Box Contents and Tips

  • Arugula: 1 small bunch Smalls; 1 large bunch Standards; 2 large bunches Doubles.  Store inside a bag in your refrigerator. Great raw for salads or wilted.  It's flavor is tangy!
  • Carrots: 1 pound Smalls; 2 pounds Standards; 4 pounds Doubles  Keep storing in plastic bag inside refrigerator until used.
  • Eggplant, the last: 2 count Smalls; 4 count Standards; 8 count Doubles.  The last of the season. They're a bit stronger in flavor and recommend a salt rub on slices before cooking them.  Our favorite way is to grill thin slices!
  • Green Kale:  1 small bunch Smalls; 1 large bunch Standards; 2 large bunches Doubles.
  • Leeks: 1 each Smalls; 1 each Standards; 2 each Doubles Use white stalk portion as a substitute for onions.  They add a rich flavor.
  • Green Peppers:  2 each Smalls; 4 each Standards; 8 each Doubles
  • Squash - Delicata: 1 each Smalls; 2 each Standards; 4 each Doubles  Store on counter top.  Delicata are not a long storage type of squash, and some have spot starting to appear.  We recommend using them up, especially since we have more squash for you!
  • Radish - Daikon (smalls and doubles only) OR Beauty Heart (standards only):  Store in a plastic bag inside your refrigerator.  Peel outside of these radishes and eat the sweet radish portion inside.  We enjoy slices of radish with any meal!
  • White Salad Turnips with Greens: 1 small bunch Smalls; 1 large bunch Standards; 2 large bunches Doubles.  Store inside a bag in your refrigerator.  Roots and leaves are both edible.  Eat the roots raw like a radish or cook until tender then top with butter.
COMING SOON: More squash, onions, potatoes, carrots and more!

News From the Farm

Well on Monday we said goodbye to 3 crew members.  For the last few years we have employed 2-3 young Amish women.  The Gingerich family has been a large part of our work force for the last 4 years, and we've known their parents for 13 year.  We will certainly miss their willingness to pitch in, and their positive attitudes during the most difficult and mundane tasks.  Honestly, we panicked a bit when we learned they were moving.  We struggle to find good employees and to find one much less three this late in the season seemed impossible.  We were contemplating a disastrous end to the season.  Our minds went dark places....

But as is usual, things work out and often for the better.  Two past stellar employees came back part time to help out, and the daughter of a long time friend and employee joined us.  And all three have been excellent additions to the team. We can now breath a sigh of relief knowing we have solid people on our team.  We are happy for the fresh energy they bring to these last weeks.

If you haven't already - mark your calendars for our last CSA gathering on Sunday, October 22.  We'll take a wagon ride to see what is still growing and how we're putting our fields to rest for the winter.  Choose out a Jack-o-Lantern pumpkin to take home too!

Eat well and happy cooking everyone,
Mat & Cate
