Dear and precious carrots, we owe so much to this crop over the years.  They have fed us and helped pay our bills in the winter.
News From the Farm

It's fair week, and we're all excited about Wednesday evening when entries are due.  Paul will be up late on Tuesday baking his chocolate cake (he's getting home late after a Cross Country Running meet); John is hoping to have is cast off his arm so he'll be able to properly arrange his habanero peppers; and I have been selecting items for the past few days as part of my 'garden box' entry along with garlic and various peppers.  Both sets of grandparents will be visiting this week and weekend to view the judged items.  Even though it's a small town fair, we enjoy going several times to see and do everything.  One night we go as family to eat dinner at a local group's booth, catch up with friends and neighbors, and tour the buildings.  Then the kids go on Friday when they're off of school (because they're all at the fair!) and they'll spend most of their time on rides thanks to wrist band day (and Alice and Duane's donation for something fun!) 

When we haven't been thinking about the fair, we've been thinking about our carrots.  Carrots have been a staple crop on our farm and some know us locally as "the carrot people".  We've counted on a big fall crop to fill our coolers for the steady weekly supply to the local food cooperatives during the winter months.  Yet the past few seasons have been challenging, hand pulling them because of soggy field conditions only to compost a good many of them due to rot on the carrots (too wet for them).  As fall begins, we have just one small planting to get out the ground.  They look like nice carrots so far, but the deer thought so too and have munched down a good number of them despite efforts to persuade them otherwise.  A larger field where we expected to grow the bulk of the fall/winter carrots first failed to germinate very well.  So we replanted.  They were germinated great, but in late July we received another short but heavy rain (2 inches in less than an hour) and the silty soil covered up the tiny fragile plants. We were left with a few random carrots, not worth the many human hours of weeding them.  So enjoy the precious carrots, folks.  While crop failures happen throughout a season, one like this is a significant one for us.  We can't help but feel this season has a message, one of depth and one of greater meaning.  We are trying to sort out the meaning, but just don't have the time for a lot of deep thinking yet.  We're in the final weeks before the cold and there is much yet to do!

Apples... this year we hope to have enough apples to finally give some to our CSA..... probably just jinxed it by saying that, but we are very excited to see lots of fruit after several years of tending and caring for the trees. Lets hope the quality will be there when it comes time to harvest.

Deadline is 8:30 am on Monday of the week you are changing. 

Every Other Week Shares - you can elect to have your share delivered on an alternate/off Thursday, OR if you want to maintain your usual EOW schedule then we will "double up" your share size on another Thursday delivery day of your choosing. 

Weekly Shares would also select a date to have their share "doubled", on another Thursday delivery day. 

What does "doubled up" mean?  If you are a Small Share then you'd receive a Standard Share; if you're a Standard Share you'd receive a Double Share.

Weekly Shares + Every-other-Week "Melon Group"

Red Beets with greens- small shares only

Tops and roots are both edible. 


Our only patch of carrots is thin but delicious.  We'll have a few givings for our CSA investors - read more in News from the Farm.


The patch is waning....the cucumbers aren't so pretty anymore. 

Leeks- select sites.... we had a calculation error that we didn't catch until we were well into packing boxes and it was too late to harvest and wash more.   We will make certain those who didn't receive them this week will get them in the coming weeks.

Replace onions with leeks.  Their rich, deep flavor is excellent!  Cut off the dark green leaves and use the white stalk portion.  

Napa Cabbage 

One final giving of napa cabbage for the season.  We love ground beef, onions and napa cabbage sautéed together, served over rice, for a good hearty meal on a cool rainy night.  Siracha sauce is a must! 
Onion, Yellow

Cured, so leave out on your counter until you're ready to use it.  Unlike the mild sweet onions that we've put into the last few boxes, yellow onions are a good storage type with strong onion taste.  An excellent onion for cooking with.    

Peppers - Habaneros (very spicy!) & Sweet Peppers 

Not all the sweet peppers are perfect, but the small blemishes can be easily cut out. It's hard to throw out the imperfects when so much of the pepper is good.  Did you know it takes 3-5 green bell peppers going bad before one turns into a perfect red one?  We don't like to be wasteful, yet don't want to be viewed as giving you junky stuff either.  It's a careful balance.   

Tomatoes - Our 'Farmhouse Cherry Mix' +

Eat them raw, cook them, freeze them.

Let your tomatoes finish ripening out on the counter, at room temperature, for a few days. You'll known they're ripe when their color deepens and they will feel soft when given a gentle squeeze.    

Zucchini - Green or Gold

The plants are starting to wane.  There are baby fruits, but the heavy dew mornings made the downy mildew to settle over the leaves and stems.  We hope it can hold on for another week or two.
