Box Contents and Tips

Box #11:  This is a Blue EOW Group

Heavy Box!

  • Green Cabbage- these have not been washed.  Remove the outer leaves.
  • Beans, Purple: Simply snap off the little stem end.  Keep in plastic bag in refrigerator until used.
  • A mix of Zucchini - Gold, Green & Patty Pan: Store in warmer part of refrigerator or on counter top.  Prefers about 50-55-degrees
  • Red Beets - these cylindrical shaped beets are great for even slices!  Store roots separate from leaves.  Leaves are great steamed and served with butter.
  • Cherry Tomato Mixture:  Store at room temperature.  Use as they become ripe - you will know they are ripe when their color darkens and they soften.  We harvest these when they are blushing and some may require some time to fully ripen- it may take as long as 3-5 days on your counter.  You will see some residue of Copper (bluish color) as we us this to control blight.  This is approved for organic use, but you will want to be certain to wash prior to eating
  • Slicing Tomato Mixture:   Store at room temperature.  Use as they become ripe- you will know they are ripe when their color darkens and they soften.  We harvest these when they are blushing and some may require some time to fully ripen- it may take as long as 3-5 days on your counter.  You will see some residue of Copper (bluish color), as we us this to control blight.  This is approved for organic use, but you will want to be certain to wash prior to eating.

News From the Farm

Peak season is here and boy are the tomatoes coming in heavy now, thanks to this week's nice hot days.  The humid conditions are pushing the fruits into ripeness, and we've been picking steady Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  It's been a whirlwind and flutter of activity as we keep up with all of the harvest.  We'll be spending Thursday harvesting beets, turnips and rutabagas to put into storage.  The season pushes on...

We wish we had photos to share this week with rainbow of color, but our camera died this week!  Luckily our friend and CSA member, Drew Shonka, has been working with us this season to help us capture the seasons with his camera.  It's always a treat to see his creative art and how we captures the farm, it's people and our work.  We'll share his photography in upcoming newsletters.  Thank you Drew! You may of see his work in some our past newsletters.  If you are ever looking for a photographer we would highly recommend- you can find him on facebook or we would be happy to give you his contact information.

We are excited to host our Second Annual Pizza Picnic on Saturday, September 13 from 3 pm - dark.  This on-farm dinner is a causal and fun event for the entire family.   We enjoy showing the farm to visitors with our u-pick farm tour and wagon ride - this is a family favorite with kids and adults.  You really get to see things growing and harvest some too!  Then our friend Chef Luke Zahm will serve gourmet pizzas, appetizers and dessert featuring our produce and other local ingredients.  The full menu will be available soon.  All are welcome to come!  Purchase your tickets here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/830863

Happy Eating!
