Greetings BD-4 Enthusiasts!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I would like to Congratulate Marcel Viljoen in South Africa. He is the first "customer built" BD-4C to fly. His maiden voyage was this November. Marcel reported that the aircraft is flying fantastic! Again Marcel Congratulations! Below are pictures from his first flight.

My dad found this article that the University of West Virginia did. I think some of you might be interested in this article.

"In 1974 the University of West Virginia in Morgantown West Virginia did a scientific paper on flight test of a BD 4  aircraft equipped with “circulation control wing”. This paper was presented to the AI AA as No.74-994 at the Sixth aircraft design, and flight test meeting. The university purchased a Bede 4 kit and build the aircraft with a  modified the wing to produce blowing flaps for boundary layer control. They tested two variation of the wing design. One design had a circular cylinder installed at the trailing edge for which they blew a jet of air. They also modified the leading edge by adding a drooped section.   They installed a blower in the rear seat to produce the air for the boundary layer control. The report  states” the minimum indicated airspeed for full circulation control and full power was 23.5 knots, which is the equivalent of a calibrated airspeed of 33.2 knots.” This correspondence to a maximum trimmed aircraft lift coefficient of 5.1 and lift coefficient  at the middle of the flap of 6.7. It is intriguing to see how many ways the BD 4 aircraft had been built and flown."

We have not yet had time to do some of the mods we wanted to do on our BD-4C. One of the things we want to do is try a prop extension with our new cowling. However, we have been experiencing a up turn in orders and while we are grateful for this we are behind our schedule on this project.

Starting in December we will be constructing a BD-4C using our new "C" drawings. If anybody you know would be interested in a fuselage on its gear this one will be for sale. Actually it maybe to the extent of having the control systems installed. Call me if you know of someone interested.
