April 2021 Parentmail
Welcome to the Breaston Pre-School April Newsletter.
We hope that you had a great Easter break and we can't wait to welcome you back on Monday!
Please read on for a reminder of our COVID policies, information and action required for this year's school leavers, craft and gardening donations, the Captain Tom 100 fundraising opportunity, and how our new snack invoicing works.
A reminder of our COVID policies
  • Use the one-way system in place at drop-off and pick-up: entering through the bottom gate and exiting through the side gate. If you are collecting early for school and the bottom gate has not yet been unlocked then you may enter through the side gate.
  • Social distance in the playground and always wear a mask on the premises unless exempt.
  • Please ensure that your child uses the handwashing station provided at drop-off before entering the building.
  • Parents/carers to stay outside of the building (please enter the cloakroom to knock if you are picking up early, and step back outside to wait), and be mindful of social distancing while dropping off at the door. If you are entering the building for any reason, please ensure that you are wearing a mask (unless exempt).
  • Limit items brought into Pre-School by your child to essentials (i.e. lunch, change bag as required). We have plenty of spare clothes for children to borrow so you do not need to supply these.
  • Anyone supposed to be self-isolating at home should stay away and not be involved in drop-off/pick-up. This includes older siblings.
  • If your child is unwell please keep them home - no child who has been given Calpol/other brands of paracetamol or ibuprofen in the 24 hours prior to the session will be allowed to attend.
These policies are in place to keep staff, children, and all our families safe. We thank you for your cooperation.

As the weather is starting to warm up we wanted to send a reminder of our suncream policy. If suncream is required, please apply to your child BEFORE attending Pre-School.
If your child is with us all day, please supply a bottle of suncream clearly labelled with your child's name for us to reapply after lunch for the afternoon session. Once the weather is sunnier, we will ask that you send your child in with an appropriate sun hat.
 Primary School Places
We hope that all our school leavers got their first choice of primary school today, but don't despair if you didn't. We have no direct involvement with school allocations but you can appeal via the council website. If you haven't received an email today please check on the council website, or wait for your offer letter to arrive in the post.

Once you have your child's school place confirmed, please fill out this form. This allows us to make contact with your child's school and arrange for their transition from Pre-School to Primary School.

School Readiness
If you had a consultation with your child's keyworker at the end of last term then you probably had a conversation about your child's school readiness, but you may find it useful to read the information provided by Derbyshire County Council:

The 10 keys for unlocking school readiness*
(*If a child is developing typically for their age)
• I can settle happily without my parent or carer
• I can tell grown-ups and friends what I need
• I can take turns to play and share when I’m playing
• I can go to the toilet on my own and wash my hands
• I can put on my own coat and shoes and feed myself
• I can tell a grown-up if I’m happy, sad or cross
•I know that what I do and say can make others happy or unhappy
• I am curious and want to learn and play
• I can stop doing what I’m doing, listen and follow simple instructions
• I enjoy sharing books with grown-ups

For more information please visit and please get in touch if you have any concerns regarding your child's readiness.
Donations Box for Creative Area
As you may know, we always have a creative area set up for the children to freely access and create whatever they wish to. We have decided to put out a donations box with a list of things that we need for the children to create their masterpieces!
Please consider donating:
  • Plastic bottle lids
  • toilet/kitchen roll cardboard tubes
  • shiny paper (sweet wrappers)
  • yarn/wool/string
  • ribbons
  • buttons
  • boxes (cardboard, shoe, unusual shaped)
  • rolls of wallpaper

We would love to do some green-fingered activities with the children soon and would welcome donations of any spare seeds, seedlings, pots, compost, or similar.
 Crisp Packet Recycling
Terracycle will be collecting our crisp packets again next week, so please bring your empty bags in ASAP and help us raise money while helping the environment!

Snack Invoicing
As we announced last month, due to lack of donations towards snack we have made the decision to start invoicing to ensure that we can provide a consistently high standard of snack and food-based learning activities for all the children of Pre-School.

If you currently receive a fees invoice every month then you will find that £1 a week will be added to it beginning with your May invoice.
If you don't currently pay fees, you will receive a monthly invoice via email for £1 a week beginning in May.

You can always view your invoices on the First Steps Parent Link app. The password for your invoice is your child's name plus their day of birth, e.g. John born on the 11th would be 'John11'. Please email with any invoicing queries.
 Captain Tom 100 - Fundraise for Pre-School!

On 6 April 2020, Captain Tom Moore set out round his garden to thank our NHS heroes. One hundred laps later, he’d raised an incredible £38.9 million for the NHS Covid-19 appeal.
His simple message of hope – “Tomorrow will be a good day” – inspired millions around the world and brought comfort and joy to so many during the pandemic.

Now it’s your turn to build on that legacy. Friday 30 April would have been his 101st birthday and to honour him and his amazing achievements, The Captain Tom Foundation would love everyone, of all ages and abilities, to take part in The Captain Tom 100.
All you need to do is dream up a challenge based around the number 100, and do it between Friday 30 April and Monday 3 May. Share your challenge on social media using #CaptainTom100

You could walk 100 laps of your garden just like Captain Tom, swim 100 lengths or sing for 100 minutes. There are no rules (apart from Government guidelines on the roadmap out of lockdown) and it's open to everyone. Do it your way and have fun!

If you and/or your child(ren) have an idea and you want to fundraise for Pre-School, set up a fundraising page or direct donations to the Pre-School Go-Fund-Me
If you email Kayleigh then she's happy to help with and advertise your fundraising challenge across all Pre-School social media platforms.

Please visit for more information!

 No Dogs
Lastly, a quick reminder that dogs are not permitted to enter Pre-School grounds. If you leave your dog outside the premises please ensure that they are sufficiently secured and that they are far enough away from the gates to allow people to enter without getting too close to them. Not everyone is a dog lover and everybody has the right to enter the premises without coming into contact with a dog. Please also ensure that any mess left by your dog is cleaned up promptly.
Thank you for your understanding.
