Beloved in Christ,

I hope you are enjoying this first week of summer in the city!  And that you are planning to take some time off for rest and recreation at some point over the months ahead.

We are looking forward to ZOOM Family Worship this Sunday at 9am—so please join us for that!  You can also worship via our Livestream Worship at 10:30am which you join through our website.  We are so happy to be really getting Into the rhythm of this beautiful online liturgy and it’s so wonderful that we often have our lay folk joining us to read in the church building.  A big thank you to Eugene, Sam, Murray and now Rob who’s back with us, for all your work in making this happen!

But the big excitement this weekend is celebrating St. John’s the Baptist’s Birthday!  That’s right, it’s our Patronal Festival (that’s church fancy for “Birthday Party”)!  And we are sure that from time to time the Baptist would have appreciated a break from eating locusts (he was fortunate to have all that honey in his diet), so we will have some treats and a birthday loot bag for everyone, along with the opportunity to share communion.  Big thanks to our amazing summer student Lo for helping to put this together!

Don’t forget also to bring a few items for our newly created pantry for our local friends in need—no-prep things like peanut butter, juice boxes, crackers, and proteins bars are perfect.

St. John the Baptist was a pioneer—always preparing the way and leading the people to Jesus who was coming after him.  Today, when we speak of a “pioneering ministry” we are referring to a congregation that tries new things, gets excited about future possibilities, and is always drawing new people into the faith.  When I first arrived among you you at Advent, I remember that we spoke about how St. John is an example for us—and how we too could prepare the way for our neighbours and friends to join us and experience what faith can be like.  Already you have been trying lots of new things in our time together—way to go!

One of the wonderful things I’ve learned about our Parish, is that St. John’s Norway is historically a pioneering church.  Norway of course is the name of the community that settled in this geographical area over 170 years ago, and they were loggers of the “Norway Pine.”  Once the church was built and consecrated, this pioneering parish planted other churches in the area.  Our first parishioners didn’t want anyone to miss out on sharing the life of faith in community!  The Baptist would have been so proud of our parish’s history—and just delights from heaven to see us live into that pioneering spirit today too—inviting and welcoming others to join us in the great God-adventure that is a life of faith!

I invite all of you to join us on Sunday between 11:30 and 12:30 in the church parking lot—you will hear the bells ringing and it will be a great joy to see each other and to remember that we too, are called to be like our Baptist patron saint—always pointing others in our lives to the person of Jesus, who we follow.

Plus, since St. John loved honey, we might have some of that too (hint hint:).

See you there!
