The League of Women Voters in January weighed in on two pieces of legislation dealing with public education. The Assembly bill is more objectionable than the Senate bill, but both severely threaten control of our schools by local elected officials and weaken public education by diverting tax dollars to private schools which are not held accountable to the same high standards. Read the League's education position and our statements on these bills here.

Despite a letter from the chair of the Government Accountability Board to Assembly Speaker Robin Vos stating that recent claims that GAB staff have acted outside their authority are "just not true," some legislative leaders are still promising to make significant changes to the government watchdog agency. The League has written in support of maintaining the independence of the GAB. See these letters by LWV Dane County and LWV of the Northwoods. Many newspapers have editorialized in support of the GAB, including the Beloit Daily News: Say no to look-the-other-way election, ethics board.

A new report from the U.S. Geological Survey shows changes in Lake Michigan as a result of climate change. Click here to learn more, including how citizens are helping to collect data for the study. For more resources, see the League's Water Education Page
