Save The Date – Conference 2017

CASA will hold its 23rd annual conference and AGM October 3 - 5, 2017 at the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel and the Northlands Centre in Edmonton, AB.
The 2017 theme is AgSafety - MAKE IT A RECORD YEAR! This year’s theme moves from the 2016 focus on kids to appeal and apply to adults on the farm. Conference presenters will deliver tools to help participants empower farm families to keep adults safe while preserving a way of life that is beloved and precious. That’s Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, we move from the Coast Hotel in downtown Edmonton to the Northlands Centre for a half day demonstration of CASA’s new BeGrainSafe training unit. First responders will stay Thursday afternoon for additional training with the unit.
This conference is instructive and inspiring. Meanwhile, contact Diane Wreford at 204-930-4612 or if you’d like to sponsor or chat about the conference in Edmonton.

Canadian Agricultural Safety Week Returns For 2017

This March, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA), the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) and presenting sponsor Farm Credit Canada (FCC) hosted the annual Canadian Agricultural Safety Week (CASW) to encourage all Canadians to be part of the AgSafe Family. CASW is a public awareness campaign focusing on the importance of safe agriculture. This year, CASW focused on adults under the three-year theme of “Be An AgSafe Family”.
CASW 2017 saw the introduction of the AgSafe Ribbon campaign. About 7,000 jute ribbons were distributed to organizations across Canada. The campaign aims to raise awareness on the importance of safe agriculture and asks all Canadians what role they play in farm safety.
CASA participated in a Facebook Live event with agricultural health and safety experts. Thousands of viewers gained valuable insights into how they can make their agricultural businesses safer for everyone. CASA also sponsored #AgChat on Twitter with the AgChat Foundation.

Help Support The FarmSafe Foundation

The FarmSafe Foundation is a registered Canadian charity supporting the farm safety initiatives of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) by:
  1. Educating the public by providing courses, seminars and workshops on farming and agricultural safety management; and
  2. Relieving conditions associated with disability by providing assistive devices and adaptive technology to people with disabilities.
Your donation will help prevent injuries one child at a time through Safety Days; relieve conditions associated with disability through the Back to Ag Program; and support the cost of farm safety and resource development and training to help keep rural communities safe.

CASA Releases New CAIR Report

In February, the Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting (CAIR) program released the latest Canadian agriculture-related fatality data to the public. The report indicates that according to the latest information, agriculture-related fatalities are declining. CAIR is the only source of national agriculture-related fatality data in Canada.
From 1990 to 2001, an average of 116 people died due to an agriculture-related incident. From 2002 to 2012, the average number of agriculture-related fatalities declined to 85 per year. Also encouraging is the fatality rates of all age groups saw decreases in this period.
“The decrease in the fatality rates is encouraging,” says Marcel Hacault, the Executive Director of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA). “It means that we are moving in the right direction.”
Between 2003 to 2012, farm machinery continued to be involved in most agriculture-related fatalities with runovers (18%), rollovers (18%) and being pinned or struck by a machine component (9%) accounting for the top three ways people were fatality injured.
Fatality rates due to rollovers and from being pinned/struck by a machinery component also declined. Rollover fatality rates decreased an average of 3.6% annually and fatality rates from being pinned/struck by a machinery component decreased an average of 7.8% annually.
