JESUS is the SAME by Cory Vance // RC Student Pastor
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas... ~Hebrews 13:8-9a (NLT)
The love of Christ doesn't change. Either does His stance on sin.
When people say that God evolves and changes over time they are incorrect. As the author of Hebrews points out, God's stance on sin does not change. It stays exactly the same. It's important to understand this so let me expound. Sin separates us from God. When we keep sinning, getting back to where we once were in our walk with God becomes more difficult because our separation creates distance. God doesn't create this distance. We do.
When Peter followed Jesus at a distance it led to trouble.
Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came over and said to him, “You were one of those with Jesus the Galilean.†But Peter denied it in front of everyone. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,†he said. Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.†Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know the man,†he said. A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.†Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!†And immediately the rooster crowed. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.†And he went away, weeping bitterly. ~Matthew 26:69-75 (NLT)
Even though Peter abandoned Jesus, Jesus still loved Peter the same. But Peter ran. Peter ran away, most likely not believing Jesus would really raise Himself from the dead three days later.
Some of us are running away from God.
Some of us are in the middle, not really knowing God, but knowing enough to get by.
Some of us are super close to God.
Peter, at one point in time, was all three. In the story above he was on the run due to the overwhelming guilt of denying Christ.
Aren't you glad the story doesn't end there? Let's pick it back up following the resurrection. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus found the tomb empty and had an encounter with Jesus...and Jesus still had Peter on His mind.
"Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.†~Mark 16:7 (NLT)
Jesus's love for Peter never changed. Jesus' love for you hasn't changed either. If your running away has caused a gap in your relationship with Jesus just remember that He is calling you by name and He's ready to welcome you home.
