"I'm Starving!" by Theresa Noel // RC Children's Pastor
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.†But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.†“Did someone bring him food while we were gone?†the disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work."
~John 4:31-34 (NLT)
Quite often I hear people say, "I'm starving!" Anyone saying that has probably never experienced true hunger, much less starvation. Yet we use the phrase so easily without thinking of how absurd it sounds. Knowing that I've always been fortunate enough to have food on my plate, I have tried to remove the phrase, "I'm starving" from my vocabulary.
The truth is, many of us have never been truly physically hungry for very long. However, our souls are starving. We fill our days up with junk food like television and video games. But the truth is, there is no nutritional value there. I am as guilty as the next person. I spend a ridiculous amount of time watching Netflix as I scroll through Facebook or play trivia games on my phone. I feel my soul crying out, "I'm starving!" And it's ridiculous because I have a buffet of Scripture ready and waiting for me! I have the opportunity to drink from the fountain of life through prayer at all times! There is all kinds of work I can be doing to further God's Kingdom every single day!
As I begin this journey of fasting and prayer, I hope to use that hunger for the foods I crave to push me to remember how hungry my soul is for the things of God. When I feel the urge to grab a salty snack, I am going to use that as a trigger to read my Bible. When I remember how much I want a Diet Coke, I'm going to put that desire to work in prayer. When the hankering for a bite of chocolate hits, I'm going to look for ways to serve others in Jesus' name. This Daniel Fast is my opportunity to truly feed my soul and I am grateful for the ways it is going to change me. I hope you will set your heart and mind on how God is going to feed your soul during this time. It could change you in ways you never knew possible.
