"bringing our story back to life..."
Mid-October 2017 eNews
Thanks for another successful season!
It's always hard seeing the displays going down, but then we get all excited about next year! We'll be keeping in touch and letting you know what's going on.
Opening Day 2018
Saturday, May 19
Congratulations to Lang Pioneer Village!
Lang has just received the People’s Choice Award as Ontario’s Best Small Museum! Attractions Ontario, a tourism-based association, organized the voting with participants choosing among a wide range of smaller museums including the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology, Ottawa’s Bytown Museum, and the Diefenbunker.
The Pioneer Village
is located in the community of Keene, just across Rice Lake and is well worth a visit. The associated Hope Mill supplied the lumber used in construction of our replica Crossen Iron Ore Car.
Lang is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with the erection of a large new barn which will allow it to remain open all year. Way to go!
Heritage Centre Closed for the Season
After one last special visit from a tour group organized by Peter Brotherhood Tours
, our doors are finally closed until next May.
Except that we are hoping for a brief visit by students from the Media Art and Design class at Durham College
. They are considering partnering with us on a class project. But right now, with the College staff on strike, everything is on hold.
Plans are already underway for next season’s exhibits under the theme “Our Built Heritage”. Speaking of which, have you seen the excavations going on next door to our Heritage Centre? It’s more built heritage right on our doorstep.
Excavations at the Legion Parking Lot
It is a fascinating exercise, watching the old Calcutt Brewery come to life again! In preparation for the building of the new Condominium/Legion building the archaeological dig is unearthing beautifully preserved ruins of the brewery buildings which ran along Spring Street.
What a shame that they will be lost again, this time permanently, when the new building is started. Hopefully there will be detailed reports made before then, enough so that a realistic model can be created.
