IUCN supports Cook Islands to create the world’s largest marine park
 
IUCN has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of the Cook Islands to support the establishment of the world’s largest marine protected area – the Cook Islands Marine Park.The park will contribute to conserving the region’s marine biodiversity, boosting local economic growth and preserving the health of the ocean globally.

The newly released Australian National Wildlife Corridors Plan provides a national framework for conservation at a landscape scale. It is built upon an understanding that in Australia, as elsewhere, the decline of biodiversity can only be halted by the protection of intact landscape, or by the restoration of habitat and connectivity to restore health to fragmented landscapes.

The area around the antique town of Butrinti in southern Albania is not only home to several globally threatened species such as the bottlenose dolphin, but also has a rich cultural history, justifying its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The core of the area is Butrinti Lagoon, a tectonic lagoon surrounded by forested hills, mountains, freshwaters and brackish marshes.

Christine Mentzel ESARO focal point for BIOPAMA

We welcome Christine Mentzel, who joined IUCN as focal point for the BIOPAMA programme for the ESARO region, based in the South Africa Country Office in Pretoria. Christine has a background in Zoology and a Masters Degree in African Mammalogy. She began her conservation career in the Serengeti National Park in 2003, and later joined the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) in South Africa. Christine can be reached at christine.mentzel@iucn.org.

EUROPARC 2012

This year’s EUROPARC Federation Conference, held in Genk, Belgium, from 22nd to 25th October 2012, centered around the theme “Re-connect” through not only re-connecting people with nature, but also nature with nature, companies with biodiversity, and policy with practice. More than 600 participants from across Europe and overseas gathered for an exchange on these issues.
