First woman to receive the Young Conservationist Award
 
A 27-year-old Brazilian Park Guard, Elisângela Sales Dos Santos, was awarded this year’s International Young Conservationist Award at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the training of indigenous and non-indigenous park guards, and for her role in increasing the recognition of these professions in her country.

Building on past success and innovations, Ernesto wants WCPA to do more, faster, better and larger and to reaffirm its role in assisting IUCN members and governments so protected areas truly become "hope spots" for sustainability. His vision is to move away from the “doom and gloom” to pride and pragmatism, well reflected through the projected "Green List of protected areas".

Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, Canada

Created in 2003, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is one of Canada’s newest national parks and just a stone’s throw from the urban clamour of Vancouver and Victoria. It protects a representative sample of the Strait of Georgia Lowlands Natural Region. Even though located much further north than the Mediterranean region, it has a comparable climate.

Protected Areas Day at COP-11

The 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be held from 08 to 19 October 2012 in Hyderabad, India. IUCN will be present with a small, targeted delegation. A dedicated Protected Areas Day is planned for 10 October and WCPA is working with LifeWeb on a full-day programme at the Rio Conventions Pavilion, titled “Natural Solutions: Protected Areas meeting Biodiversity Targets and adapting to  Global  Change”.

BIOPAMA moved forward at the IUCN World Conservation Congress

The Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA), funded under the EC/ Intra ACP Envelope for Biodiversity, was officially launched and attracted international attention, through two high level events at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Jeju, Republic of Korea.
