Spring Citizens Police Academy
The Atlanta Police Department is looking for outstanding citizens to join the 2015 Spring Citizens Academy on Wednesday, April 29. The Citizens Police Academy provides a unique opportunity to learn how the police department operates and provides participants with an opportunity to give feedback that can only enhance police and community relations.

The Citizens Police Academy participants will learn about departmental procedures as well as hear about the many units that comprise the Atlanta Police Department, including 911, Internal Affairs, and the Training Academy. Citizens will participate in a zone ride-along and watch a K-9 demonstration. Participation requires a commitment of three hours, one night a week for an eight week period.

“The Citizens Police Academy was a great experience and I would encourage anyone who wants to learn about their local law enforcement to sign up.  I had a greater understanding of what officers go through on a daily basis, especially in the ride-along and the active shooter simulator,” said Atlanta resident Katie Kosciolek. “I definitely have a greater appreciation for the Atlanta Police Department.”

Classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Herbert T. Jenkins Atlanta Police Academy located at 180 Southside Industrial Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30354. Additionally, potential candidates should meet several requirements including residing in the metropolitan Atlanta area, be at least 21 years-old, and have no felony or misdemeanor convictions within one year of application. A standard background check will be completed. Interested citizens can request an application by emailing Atlantacops@atlantaga.gov. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2015.

Morningside Mile To Benefit Fire Station No. 19
Morningside Mile logoThis year's Morningside Mile will benefit historic Fire Station No. 19 in Virginia-Highland, the oldest continuously operating fire station in the City of Atlanta. The one mile point to point run is being held on Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Noon. The first 500 registrants will receive a technical t-shirt (others get cotton). Register now on active.com to show your support. A block party follows the race.

Clarification about Fire Station No. 19 replacement plans:
Fire Station No. 19 is one of three fire stations slated for replacement in 2016. This list is generated as solely a proposal to lifecycle all stations based on such variables as age, building code, etc. However, the capital necessary for a new facility has not been budgeted, nor are there yet any viable sources, thus dramatically lessening the likelihood that this will actually happen. I am continuing to facilitate dialog between Atlanta Fire leadership and concerned community residents, and am confident that we can preserve this treasured neighborhood asset.
