The newspaper that gives back to the Earth – literally via One Earth [Shared]

By Douglas E. Welch on Jul 20, 2022 02:16 pm

I have seen other projects like this, but not on this scale. Companies need to ensure they are delivering seeds compatible with the local environment, but what a great way to easily get people growing. – Douglas

What do you do with your newspaper when you’re done reading it? Put it in the recycle bin? Save it for packing paper? Well, one Japanese publishing company wanted you to be able to grow herbs with it! The “Green Newspaper” was invented by the publisher of the famous Japanese daily, The Mainichi Shimbunsha. Published for “Greenery Day” on May 4, 2016, the special edition dedicated to environmental news was printed on 100% biodegradable paper with plant-based ink, and embedded with seeds that, when planted, would grow into flowers to attract butterflies and other pollinators, or herbs to eat. The publisher instructed people to tear the discarded newspaper into small pieces, plant the shreds in soil, and then water the container as they would any plant.

The Historic Concrete Bridge In Pasadena Is The Only One Of Its Kind In Southern California via Only In Your State [Shared]

By dewelch on Jul 20, 2022 02:04 pm

I love looking at this bridge every time I drive through Pasadena and I have hiked beneath it a number of times. I even made artwork and products out of the photos I have taken over the years. It is quite a lovely piece of architecture. – Douglas

Driving along Ventura Freeway across the Arroyo Seco, drivers can catch a glimpse of one of the most unique bridges in Southern California. Considered a feat in engineering when it was constructed, the Colorado Street Bridge is striking to look at with wide arches and stunning lamp fixtures. The historic bridge is truly one-of-a-kind, making it a beloved spot for photography and sightseeing. It is well worth it to go out of your way to drive or walk across this magnificent bridge whenever you’re in Pasadena!

A Remote Controlled Robotic Dog Inspired by the Design of Theo Jansen's Walking Strandbeest Sculptures via Laughing Squid [Shared]

By techiq@welchwrite.com (Douglas E. Welch) on Jul 18, 2022 04:55 pm

The Q science channel engineer skillfully built a remote-controlled dachshund with legs inspired by the same mechanical design pioneered by Theo Jansen for his Strandbeest kinetic sculptures. The pup was built out of plywood and responded to a controller that was also made in the shape of a little wiener dog.

If you want a dog but for some reasons can’t – here is an answer. Build robotic dog out of plywood. It won’t replace the real dog, but better than nothing

The unique design coincidentally gave the wooden canine the very distinctive waddle of the dachshund breed.

Best Flowers to Plant in Fall - 12+ Fall Flowers to Plant via Food52 [Shared]

Even the best cared-for yard can look a little worn by the end of the summer when many plants are covered with powdery mildew, a widespread and easily identified plant disease (for reassurance, it does not kill the plant, it’s just unsightly). Planting some fall-blooming flowers for a fresh look is a perfect remedy to perk up your yard.

Fall is also the time to plant spring-blooming bulbs that provide the color splashes we crave after a long winter.

Explain things simply by Andrew Yeung [Shared]

By dewelch on Jul 18, 2022 04:41 pm

I must admit that when I was studying for my communications degree I often laughed at the seeming silliness of it all. Surely everyone knows how to communicate properly, right? Well, as we all find as we grow older, no, many people DON’T communicate very well and some even try to communicate poorly. Here are some tips that made me think again about my academic communication training. – Douglas

Explain things simply - by Andrew Yeung

Sometimes, less is more, and shorter, direct statements are more impactful. This can be true for both written or spoken prose.

Explaining things simply, and communicating concepts well is a massively underrated skill in today’s business environment.

School teaches us that more = better, and as a result, we’ve learned to minimize white-space and maximize word count. But in reality — we face real constraints like limited headspace, time, and attention.

Aim to maximize signal — minimize noise.

Here are 5 ideas I’ve learned over the course of my career on how to explain things more simply:
