Each newsletter we will provide tips from our senior GLOCK armorers focusing on the performance and maintenance of GLOCK pistols.

Ammunition Basics
Ammunition is an extremely important and often overlooked aspect of firearms. As far as handguns go, we primarily deal with 2 types of ammo: target and defensive. In this edition of Tech Tips, we will discuss some basic knowledge regarding ammunition.

Target Ammunition

Target ammunition is commonly referred to as Full Metal Jacket, FMJ, FMC, or "ball" ammo. Full metal jacket is ammo in which the bullet consists of a soft core (usually made of lead) encased in a shell of harder metal. This type of ammo is generally much cheaper than defensive ammo and is intended for target shooting. Fully jacketed ammo does not expand well by design, making it a less than optimal choice for a self defense round due to over penetration concerns.

Defensive Ammunition

Defensive ammunition is ammunition designed with the purpose of personal protection. They are commonly referred to as JHP (jacketed hollow point) or hollow point ammunition. There are many different types of defensive ammunition available. This type of ammo generally contains a hard shell surrounding a hollow center and frequently has notches along the tip of the bullet. These notches allow parts of the bullet to separate on impact, allowing them to expand in a flower-like form. This leads to diminished penetration, but an increased wound channel. This makes JHP rounds an ideal candidate for defensive carry. These rounds are normally more expensive due to the machining involved in fashioning the hollowpoint.

Calibers

Caliber simply refers to the diameter (width) of a bullet. Depending on the caliber, bullets are measured in inches as part of the Imperial system, and millimeters as part of the Metric system. GLOCK pistols are available in .380 ACP, 9mm, .357 SIG, .40SW, 10mm, 45 ACP, and 45 GAP. There is a never-ending debate as to which caliber is best. One caliber may appeal more to some shooters than others. Go on any forum and type in 9mm or .45acp, and you’ll see a debate that has been raging for the last 100 years. Caliber comparisons often involve trajectory, magazine capacity, expansion, penetration, velocity, and stopping power.

Grain Weight

The grain weight is the actual mass and weight of the bullet itself. Normally heavier grain bullets travel slower and lighter grain bullets travel faster. Both of these characteristics have their pros and cons. As with calibers, you will find that there are advocates of both heavier and lighter grains. Ideally, you should choose a grain that fits your intended purpose.

Hand loaded/Reloaded Ammunition vs. Factory Ammunition

Hand loaded or reloaded ammunition generally refers to the private manufacture of cartridges using previously fired or new cartridge cases and new bullets, primers, and powder. Factory ammunition is ammo that uses all new components and is loaded in a factory, computer controlled setting. The major difference in these ammunitions is their consistency. We see countless pistols that have "blown up" due to bad, reloaded ammunition. The possibility of error when making handloaded and reloaded ammunition is far greater than that of factory loaded ammunition. Because of this, it should be noted that GLOCK and other firearm manufactures do not condone the use of hand loaded or reloaded ammunition. If you plan on shooting hand loaded or reloaded ammunition through your GLOCK it would a good idea to look into purchasing a stainless steel barrel with a fully supported chamber.

In the next edition of Tech Tips we will discuss the differences and options for GLOCK barrels.
