Each newsletter we will provide tips from our senior GLOCK armorers focusing on the performance and maintenance of GLOCK pistols.

This week we discuss the slide stop and slide lock; their function, common mistakes, and modification options.
The slide stop and slide lock are both essential parts of the GLOCK pistol. The most common mistake involving these two parts is the misuse of their proper nomenclature. The slide stop is the part located on the left side of the pistol that holds the slide back. The slide lock protrudes from both sides of the pistol frame and is used to remove the slide from the frame of the pistol.

Slide Stop: The slide stop performs two main functions on the GLOCK pistol. It holds the slide in the "back" position after the last round has been fired to let the shooter know that the magazine is empty and it allows the shooter to purposely lock the slide in the "back" position. An incorrectly installed or broken slide stop will result in the slide unintentionally locking back during fire.

A common misconception is that the slide stop is designed to release the slide from the "back" position during reloading. This is untrue. GLOCK originally designed the slide stop to simply stop the slide in the "back" position. GLOCK intended the pistol to be released and reloaded from the "back" position by the "sling shot" method. The "sling shot" method involves pulling the slide back on a loaded mag and releasing it rapidly to chamber the first round. To do it properly, the slide must be released with "authority", otherwise it may not go fully into battery.

It should be noted that although the slide stop was not designed by GLOCK to be used as a slide release, people have been using it as such since the pistol was released over 25 years ago. This method of releasing the slide on a loaded magazine does no harm to the weapon and can be used to facilitate faster reloading. However, the "sling shot" method is often taught and preferred by many due to the fact that in a stressful situations fine motor skills are often lost. This circumstance can make locating and manipulating the slide stop a difficult maneuver. The bottom line is that whichever method you choose, what you do in training is probably what you will do under real threat conditions.

Slide lock: The slide lock (commonly known as the "takedown lever" or "takedown tab") is designed to fit into a notch located on the lug of the barrel and prevent the slide from coming off of the pistol. This "lockup" is also what keeps the pistol in battery. If the slide lock is installed incorrectly, the slide may come off the gun unintentionally when firing or otherwise. The slide lock is also used to field strip the pistol for cleaning and service. Instructions on how to do this properly are located here.
