Dear <<First Name>>, Here’s the course information for StART Painting Watercolour Landscapes. This course will be running for 5 weeks in November (2nd - 30th) on Tuesdays 4-6pm at The Studio.

Painting Watercolour Landscapes

SUMMARY: Watercolour paints uniquely lend themselves to Landscapes. Fast and loose, or slow and steady? Learn how to control watercolour paint as well as embrace its unpredictability and go with the flow!

Practise and understand exciting techniques including: watercolour washes, layering, wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, stippling, spatter, masking and sgraffito.

Enjoy 5 weeks of Landscape Projects and go home with paintings to be proud of.

Lesson 1: Painting Mountains

Date: 02/11/21

10 mins - Intro / getting to know you

10 mins - Atmospheric Perspective
10 mins - An Introduction to Thumbnail Sketching

10 mins - Colour studies

Break with Refreshments

1 hour - Painting a Mountain Landscape

Materials: Watercolour set and brushes*, Pencil

Lesson 2: Painting Skies

Date: 09/11/21

  • 10 mins - Stretching Paper

  • 10 mins - Composition: Foreground, Middleground, Background.

  • 10 mins - Demonstration on painting clouds (wash, sponging & lifting)

  • 10 mins - Wet-on-Wet Studies / experimentation


  • Break with Refreshments

1 hour - Painting a Skyscape

Materials: Watercolour set and brushes*, Gumstrip, gum arabic, spray bottle

Lesson 3: Painting Fields

Date: 16/11/21

  • 10 mins – Masking tape, masking fluid and wax resist

  • 10 mins - Spatter technique (the impression of a field of flowers)

  • 10 mins - Scratching out / Sgraffito (for grass)

  • 10 mins - How to paint a ‘Crisp’ Poppy using wet on dry layers

Break with Refreshments

1 hour - Painting a Poppy Field

Materials: Watercolour set and brushes*, Masking Fluid, Masking tape, wax crayons

Lesson 4: Painting Trees

Date: 23/11/21

  • 10 mins – Sponging and stippling

  • 10 mins - Dabbing / pointillism

  • 10 mins - Creating volume and shadow

  • 10 mins - Using Watercolour Pencils

Break with Refreshments

  • 1 hour - Painting a Treescape

Materials: Watercolour set and brushes*, Watercolour Pencils, natural sponge,

Date: 30/11/21

  • 10 mins - Simple sea

  • 10 mins - Reflections (e.g. boat, lighthouse, people on wet sand)

  • 20 mins - Making Waves

Break with Refreshments

  • 1 hour - Painting a seascape

Materials: Watercolour set and brushes*, Gumstrip, gum arabic, masking fluid, spray bottle

Recommended Materials

Any watercolour set you have is fine. If you need to buy one I recommend:

You will need these. Other materials you can borrow (but you might want to pick up your own so you can practise at home).
