This is the email we received from Simon Skinner of Big Brothers Big Sisters who is the Community Engagement Developer:
Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently looking for caring, responsible people to become volunteer mentors to guide children and youth (ages 6-18).
I am writing in the hope that some members of your centre would be interested in volunteering a small amount of their time to mentor a child. Currently, we have a waitlist of 180 children for our one to one mentoring programs within Niagara Falls and South Niagara service areas (covering Niagara Falls, Welland, Pelham, Port Colborne, Wainfleet and Fort Erie communities) with lists are growing weekly.
At present, a child can wait up to two years to access this program because we simply do not have enough volunteer mentors and organisations such as Coronation 50 Plus help us to reduce that wait time.
Our mentoring programs have supported research supporting mentoring programs today have life-long impacts on both the child/youth (Little) and volunteer (Big). One hour per week is all it takes for In-School Mentoring and two to four hours weekly for a Big Brother or Big Sister.
