13th Annual Ride of Silence Honours the Injured and the Fallen
NIAGARA FALLS, ON - The 13th Annual Ride of Silence will take place Wednesday, May 15, beginning and ending at Firemen's Park. The ride starts at 7 p.m. This year, the Park in the City Committee has enlisted the help of Amici Per La Vita Niagara Cycling Club to organize the event.
Inception Cyclery, a St. Catharines-based bike retail and repair shop, will provide complimentary bicycle checks for participants who arrive early, starting at 6:15 p.m.
"Cycling is a passion of mine," says Brandon McGuire, owner/operator of Inception Cyclery. "I love to take on any opportunity that I have to give back and promote safe cycling."
New for 2019 is a 5 km family-friendly route which follows the Haulage Trail and continues through Solar Subdivision. This shorter ride is suitable for beginners and families with children.
The traditional 10 km route will take cyclists along Mountain Road, Portage Road, Stanley Avenue, the Millennium Recreational Trail - Paisley Janvary-Pool Pathway, Morrison Street, and Dorchester Road, back to Firemen's Park.
After working up an appetite along these routes, riders and their families are invited back to Firemen's Park for a barbecue hosted by the SCVFA. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be available for purchase.
The Ride of Silence is an international event, hosted annually on the 3rd Wednesday of May, in 315 cities across 27 countries. The event aims to raise awareness of the Share The Road initiative and honour those who have been seriously injured or killed while cycling. The event also hopes to inspire love and respect for cycling among new and young riders, to get them on the road confidently and safely. The ride is completely free with no registration, sponsorship, or pledge fees required. Rules of the road apply and helmets are mandatory. Riders must feel comfortable cycling along the roadway.
