Presented by the Niagara Falls Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee

NIAGARA FALLS, ON - The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee of Niagara Falls (MYAC) is seeking applicants for the Jim Mitchinson Scholarship, an annual award that recognizes the importance of leadership and community involvement among local high school students. One or two deserving students will win up to $1,000 this year.

MYAC developed the scholarship with a focus beyond academic achievement. To be eligible for the Jim Mitchinson Scholarship, students must achieve a minimum grade average of 75 percent, but more importantly, demonstrate solid leadership and long-term involvement in their community or school.

The award is funded by Tom Mitchinson in his father's honour.

Applications will be received online at until Thursday, April 30, 2020. MYAC members and their relatives are not eligible to apply.

James (Jim) W. Mitchinson was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, in 1925 and died in 2013. In his lifetime, Jim served in World War II, studied at the University of Toronto, married, raised a family, and became extremely involved in the community upon returning to Niagara Falls in 1949 (all before his 25th birthday). His exemplary volunteer contributions over the years led to many awards, including two City of Niagara Falls Volunteer Recognition Awards and the prestigious Ontario Heritage Community Recognition Award. A short biography of Jim's life and achievements can be viewed at

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee is made up of 25 high school students including representatives from all five high schools in Niagara Falls. MYAC provides a voice for the youth of Niagara Falls, informs Council regarding important matters affecting high school students, and acts as a positive advocate for youth.
