In this exhibition, Cayuga artist Sam Thomas examines the dark legacy of the Canadian Indian Residential school system. Working alongside survivors and their families, Thomas sheds light on what happened behind the doors of these church-run, government-funded institutions.

Awakening Metis Culture Through Art
November 23 @ 1-5pm
Picture of Brian Kon

This presentation/workshop includes a discussion of the Metis people of Canada -- both past and present. In addition to sharing his culture, local Metis Artist Brian Kon will provide participants with a hands-on experience of creating their own dot art painting based on the beadwork of the Metis. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
Brian Kon is an internationally recognized visual artist from the Metis Community.  Originally from the Métis homeland of the Red River Settlement, Brian now lives in Niagara Falls, ON.  His style of art is called Dot Art (Bead Art Painting); which is a modern version of traditional beadwork created by Metis people. Painting with the tip of a feather, each "bead" is applied as a single dot of paint to create the images in his art.  Many of the designs in Brian's paintings can be traced to beadwork found on historic clothing and possessions of Metis people.
