HAPPIER HOLIDAYS AND LONGER SUNDAYS IN NIAGARA FALLS

NIAGARA FALLS, ON - The City of Niagara Falls wants to make Sundays a little longer and holidays a little happier for Niagara Falls Transit Services riders. Beginning May 12, 2019 transit buses on all City routes will run up until 9 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. Previously, the bus service ended by 7 p.m.

“Our riders have consistently asked for longer, later service on these days and we are listening,” says Carla Stout, Manager of Transit Operations. “We are committed to providing a convenient transit system that provides realistic travel options to our residents and visitors.”

The City’s bus operators are on board, too, having also asked for these changes on behalf of their riders.

“As operators, we work hard to provide great service and keep things running smoothly,” says Margaret Gilbert, President of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1582, the bus drivers’ collective bargaining group. “These aren’t big changes for us, but they will make a big difference to our riders.”

Happier riders mean smoother rides for everyone.

Since the implementation of the Transit Service Improvement Plan in 2014, ridership on city routes has increased by 12 per cent each year on average. Routes serving the tourism district have seen some of the largest increases in ridership with more riders accessing local transit to travel to and from work at local hotels, restaurants, shops and other attractions. For most of these riders, the extended service hours on Sundays and public holidays are expected to better align with their workdays.

Niagara Falls City Council approved the extended hours as part of the 2019 Operating Budget on March 19, 2019.
