Appointments: Committees, Boards & Commissions

At Tuesday's meeting, after reviewing over 160 applications from the citizens of Niagara Falls, Council made 70 citizen appointments to various boards, commissions and committees for the current term (2019-2022). Council representatives were also decided for most of the boards and committees. The remaining positions will be determined at a later date.

Report: School Crossing Guards

At Tuesday's meeting, Council approved an hourly wage adjustment for School Crossing Guards to support recruitment efforts and staffing levels. The wage will be increased to $17.34 per hour, effective February 1, 2019.

Smoke
By-Law Amendment: To Prohibit the Smoking of Tobacco and Any Other Substances on City Property

At Tuesday's meeting, Council approved By-law No. 2019-14, which amends By-law 2011-51, to prohibit not only the smoking of tobacco or any other substance, but also prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes, vape pens, or any personal vaporisers upon or within any lands or buildings owned by The Corporation of the City of Niagara Falls.

Bell Let's Talk
In recognition of the 9th Annual Bell Let's Talk Day, a flag raising ceremony was held today, January 30, at Rosberg Park, next to City Hall.

Proclamation: Eating Disorder Awareness Week
In support of the awareness efforts made by the National Eating Disorder Information Centre, the week of February 1 to 7, 2019 has been proclaimed Eating Disorder Awareness Week in Niagara Falls.
Flag Raising: Knights of Columbus Week
In recognition of the 116th annual Knights of Columbus convention which is anticipated to bring 1,500 guests to Niagara Falls this spring, April 23 to May 1, 2019 has been declared Knights of Columbus Week and a flag will be raised at City Hall.
Women's Place Book Riot
The annual book sale fundraiser will be held at the Gale Centre once again. The event kicks off with a pre-sale on June 5 and continues until June 9, 2019. For more information about Women's Place, Nova House, Serenity Place or the Book Riot, please visit womensplacesn.org.
Poster: National Poetry Month 2019
National Poetry Month: April 2019
Council voted to support National Poetry Month in April. Local publisher Jordan Fry (Grey Borders Books) says poetry is an engaging, artistic endeavor, "meant to create discussion, inspire, and highlight various aspects of the world we live in." The theme of 2019 National Poetry Month is "Nature".
