Turn Yourself On to the Off-Season!

As we leave behind the northern hemisphere's peak holiday season of July and August with its crowds and exorbitant prices, we move into the pleasantly refreshing and vastly underrated no-man’s land of low-season travel. Far from being a time to pack the passport away for another year, the quiet months of September, October and November can be a real boon to the money-conscious traveller who prefers the relative tranquillity of holidaying when everyone's back at work and the kids are in school.

To kick-start your appreciation for low-season travel, we have a fantastic 2-for-1 autumn promotion from Urban Adventures taking place in Europe’s most romantic cities: book a tour and a friend travels free! Also up for grabs is an iPhone, courtesy of the cool city guide and new kid on the WHL block, Lime&Tonic. We also look to pique your interest with our Top 5 picks for off-season hotspots and a glimpse at autumn activities worth travelling for.

Our other regular features this month see our Traveller Tale extolling the virtues of a fall visit to Philadelphia. We also delve into the travel tales of Nicola Swann, the local partner in Uganda, and take a look at the Inside Word on what’s hot in Manado, Indonesia.

Get inspired this autumn!

Feature: Autumn Activities - Getting a High from the Low Season

NATASHA ROBINSON 9 september 2010

As summer takes its final bow (or winter, depending on which end of the planet you’re standing), it’s easy to think of the months ahead as a bit of a barren travel wasteland. Please don’t! Not only are off-season holidays far from the madding crowd, more relaxed and easier on the wallet, but they take advantage of milder temperatures for outdoor pursuits that can be not all that fun when it’s just too darn hot… or cold! Here we put the ‘off’ season myth to bed with a selection of what to do and where after summer’s curtain call.

Traveller Tale: Philadelphia Is Fine in the Off-Season

Lauren Fritsky 8 September 2010

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ranks as America’s sixth-largest city, and in the summer it seems even larger. Numerous parades and festivals unfold in the summer months and the city’s historic hotspots make it a magnet for even more visitors from far and wide. But all this extra action equals traffic-jammed highways and overzealous tourists. Take my advice and journey to the City of Brotherly Love in the autumn season, when it comes alive but doesn’t overwhelm with big crowds and hard-to-reach attractions. You’ll get some more personal space while scoping out the main events and landmarks.

When it comes to great outdoor vacations, one could hardly do better than escaping to the European wilderness areas overseen by PAN Parks. The PAN Parks foundation provides support to 11 parks in Europe, encompassing some of the continent’s most spectacular natural habitats, from mist-shrouded bog lands, thunderous waterfalls and raging rivers to towering snow-capped peaks. One of the most strikingly beautiful and undisturbed of these parks is Peneda-Gerês National Park, which lies in Portugal’s extreme northwest.

Feature: Autumn Is the New Summer - Browsing the Best Off-Season Beach Breaks

Natasha Robinson 14 September 2010

The sunny season in my neck of the woods (Czech Republic) has been a blink-or-you’ll-miss-it affair and I must have blinked. If you too are still a little peeved by the summer washout and aren’t yet ready to batten down the hatches in preparation for another gruelling winter, fear not! There are still plenty of places to replenish that flagging vitamin D. And better yet, you won’t have to break the bank or fight tooth and nail for your patch of sand. Bliss! Here we check out which destinations have the best beach-break ability to blow away those autumn cobwebs.
