BHC AmeriCorps wraps up 3 successful years of service!

Since 2011, AmeriCorps has provided mentoring services (30 members) to over 650 mentees at Polytechnic, Poly Academy of Achievers and Learners (PAAL), Cabrillo, and Wilson High School, plus Washington and Nelson Middle School. Meeting weekly with each mentee, the members have provided support as needed including but not limited to, tutorial support, behavior management strategies, developing and implementing curriculum, coordinating field trips to various colleges and other outings.

Over the last three years, in partnership with their mentees, the members have organized various community service events such as a Health Fair, Neighbor Clean Up, and " What does Health Mean to Me" Photography Exhibit.

To learn more about the mentees and their community, AmeriCorps has partnered with Communities with Power for Change (CPC), Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition (LBIRC), LBUSD Male and Female Academy, Long Beach Women's Shelter and Downtown Associated Youth Services (DAYS). Washington Middle School in partnership with DAYS will host their third poetry contest. Washington students submit their poems, are reviewed by members and teachers, then the winning entries are recognized at our annual end of year dinner event.

AmeriCorps has various end of year celebrations, acknowledging the work of the mentees and it is truly amazing. The end of year events are approaching and let us know if you would like to attend.

Long Beach Fresh

Vision
A city where local healthy food is widely produced, distributed and consumed.

Mission
To connect Eaters, Feeders and Seeders with resources, partners and models that can empower them to resolve their needs and use their offerings.

Their Values
1. Food Security
Food Security is the fundamental benefit of a healthy local food economy. Learn more about food security here and here.

2. Local, Seasonal & Sustainable Foods
We believe in improving access to locally-grown, seasonal and sustainably grown food in Long Beach.

3. Start Small/Prototypes/Pilot Programs
Got an idea? Let’s test it on the small scale. A lot of small projects that serve a wide variety of people means tackling more projects and serving more people — while using less time and money.

4. Face Problems that are Low to the Ground
Whether it’s raising money, learning how to write a press release, learning how to host a fundraiser, or finding a space to operate, everyone encounters small bumps on the road to success. We believe in tackling those small bumps…before they become roadblocks.

5. “All Boats Rise Together”
When one part of our local food movement succeeds, we all benefit whether through affiliation, collaboration, more customers, or in other ways. We believe in a non-competitive food community where each player supports one another and we all cheer individual successes.

6. “Carrot Over Stick”
We believe the food economy can grow faster through more win-win programs and partnerships. We prioritize win-win projects and we believe every member of the food community deserves a fair incentive to engage in collaboration.

Enter to win $100 Gift Card for Completing this Survey!

Have you ever been a Long Beach renter?  Fill out this 5-minute survey about your experience with housing quality issues, and enter to win $100 gift card to Buono's pizzeria!

These surveys will help us gather residents' experiences on how they dealt with housing quality issues (cockroaches, mold, etc) and how their landlord and/or the City responded.  This is critical information to give us insight on breadth and depth of substandard housing and how it affects our community.
