Community members unite for our Summer Celebration

Full Hub Summer Celebration
On July 10th, Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach hosted our quarterly Full Hub Celebration to recognize our organizing work and honor the African American culture in Long Beach. The event was attended by over 100 people from the local community and co-sponsored by BHC Long Beach, the African American Convening Committee, and the Office of Councilmember Dee Andrews.
This session's program included performances by Queens Historical Society, CSULB Multicultural Center Director Dr. James Manseau-Sauceda, and community leader Kazmere Duffey. Attendees also got to hear presentations from local leader (and legend) Ms. Evelyn Knight as well as members of the Jordan Math Collaborative. Finally, the community had the chance to honor and recognize (and surprise!) our former Hub Manager Rene Castro and former Hub Coordinator Ana Bonilla.

Thank you to all our partners, organizations, friends, and allies in the African American community for coming together. BHCLB would like to give a special thanks to Councilmember Rex Richardson, Councilmember Dee Andrews, Senator Ricardo Lara, and Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal for their recognitions and support!

Empact LB to Lead Bicycle Tour of Community Gardens and Farms

Restorative Justice Training Circle

(Published by the Long Beach post) Bicycles have become transportive vessels for much needed change. They can be used to inspire healthy mobility, to empower their users with an otherwise forsaken independence and to promote learning in all its forms.

Empact Long Beach, a grassroots bicycle advocacy group, has organized a slow-paced bicycle tour of community gardens and farms in the city.

Help Housing Long Beach meet their goal!

Have you completed the Home Quality survey yet? Help Housing Long Beach reach their goal of 600 surveys! Housing has always been a challenging issue to work on at the federal, state and local levels. But recently, housing advocates across California celebrated major victories for housing in this year’s State budget. These victories include:

  • $76.2 million in bond funds for The Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention Act of 2014 (Prop. 41).
  • $100 million from the General Fund for the Multifamily Housing Programs, including housing for individuals or families experiencing chronic homelessness, homeless youth, and individuals leaving institutional settings.
  • $130 million from Cap-and-Trade dollars to support the implementation of sustainable communities strategies, including affordable housing near transit.

And here locally, residents are talking with neighbors, collecting surveys, meeting with partner organizations, and building a movement for housing equity in Long Beach. With several new councilmembers and a new Mayor now officially in office, we look forward to working with our elected officials to make housing a priority locally.

Please join the movement! Take the survey!

Inauguration reflects the city’s rich diversity

(Published by the Long Beach Press-Telegram) One of the most diverse cities in the nation now has a City Council and mayor to match.

A new nine-member council — composed of a Latino woman, an Indian-American woman, an Iranian-American woman, a white man, a white woman, a Latino man and three black men — met for the first time on Tuesday, presided over by Mayor Robert Garcia, the first Latino and first gay person to hold the office.

Children's Vigil and Fundraiser

LBACA Coalition Meeting
Attention: Due to the recent updates on this matter, it seems we will be better able to serve the children with monetary donations rather than material resources. Because it was announced recently that there will not be anybody transported to California from the other detention centers, we will not be able to give those in need the items they require in a timely manner. Of course, anything and everything you can donate that you feel the children and mothers would benefit from is truly and greatly appreciated, but we are recommending that you consider monetary donations as your primary contributions.

Community Inclusion Circle Series

The California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ), Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach, and the South Coast Interfaith Council (SCIC) will be hosting a Community Inclusion Circle Series!
Community Inclusion Circles Series creates opportunities to build relationships through the power of community. In circle we will explore our own experiences to build a more inclusive community support system. Learn about restorative justice practices and infuse them into discussions, problem solving and community building. Throughout the series you will have an opportunity to be trained in circle keeping practices.

There is no criteria to participate. The circles will have a circle keeper trained in restorative practices and help set the circle guidelines, get the circle going and step back into  the participant role so that the circle can organically grow. Prompts in the circle are various and often light and low risk.  Circles hold very deep conversations as they allow participants to move the conversation. The magic of a circle brings people together affording community to develop without being facilitated.
