BHC Long Beach Sponsors 10 Riders for Long Beach Marathon Bike Tour

This October, Building Healthy Communities sponsored 10 bike riders for the Long Beach Marathon Bike Tour.  The riders had a great time rolling 20 miles through our city.  The group was led by Elizabeth Williams with Cali Bike Tours and had this to say:

When we receive the kind of generous support and sponsorship like we received from Building Healthy Communities, it gives greater visibility to our cause of creating active, healthy communities within our diverse city.  We have a very short video showing a few of the riders at the Bike Tour.

We want to congratulate the riders and are excited to share this short video that they produced to document their experience!

BHC Long Beach Welcomes 5 New Steering Committee Members!

[LONG BEACH, CA] – Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach (BHC Long Beach) is excited to announce the election of five new members to serve on the Steering Committee for the 2013-2015 term! Members of the BHC Long Beach Steering Committee are tasked with supporting the effective implementation of the Community Action plan and that the plan is accountable to community constituencies as well as updated on a regular basis.

Steering Committee members serve two-year terms and play an integral role in guiding the work of this ten-year, multi-million dollar initiative. Members can serve in one of three capacities: as an Adult Community Representative, a Youth Community Representative or a Community Organization representative, with seven seats available for each group. Last Tuesday, five more seats were voted in to fill the open seats for Adult Community Representatives. What makes these elections unique is that the voting body is made up of their peers—their neighbors. This system of elections, which also emphasizes diversity of age, gender, race, geography, etc., symbolizes the accountability that our Steering Committee members hold to their peer groups, and to the larger community.

With a recently completed update to the Community Action Plan and newly elected Steering Committee Members, BHC Long Beach is ready for the next 7 years of this 10-year initiative to make Health Happen Here!

Candle Light Vigil for Philippine Typhoon Victims

Dear Friends of The Filipino Migrant Center,

On behalf of the Filipino Migrant Center (FMC) of Long Beach and the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), we would like to cordially invite you to attend our Candle Light Vigil for victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.  The candlelight vigil will take place on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 7:45pm in front of Grace United Methodist Church in Long Beach (2325 East 3rd Street).

Super Typhoon Haiyan hit the central Philippines on November 8, 2013 with wind speeds of up to 200 mph that devastated the provinces of Leyte, Samar, and the surrounding islands.  According to some Philippine officials the estimated death toll may be as high 10,000 with thousands more missing.  Several of the FMC staff members and volunteers have family members who were affected by the storm and lost everything, and many are still unaccounted for.

The Candlelight vigil will include prayers and testimonies from community members.  FMC and NAFCON will also collect monetary donations for its Bayanihan Disaster Relief Campaign which partners with Philippine NGO’s to provide immediate relief to the typhoon victims. Donations can also be made on NAFCON’s Paypal account: http://tinyurl.com/bayanihanreliefeffort.

Checks can be made payable to “St. George Fontana,” and on the memo line, write: “NAFCON Bayanihan Relief” to clearly allocate it for this purpose. Donors can submit their contribution to me (NAFCON Socal Regional Coordinator) or it can be mailed to our local nonprofit partner, c/o Naida Castro at 17895 San Bernardino Avenue, Fontana, CA 92335-6155. Please, include your return address with your donation. For qualifying tax- deductible donations, please, email trea@nafconusa.org for the necessary documentation.

Thank you and we hope you can join us.

Sincerely,

Alex Montances

Leadership Opportunities

Bank of America 2014 Student Leaders Program

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Student Leaders® Program is accepting applications for the 2014 Student Leaders® program.

Since its inception in 2004, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 2,000 exemplary high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for improving their communities.  The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and helps develop them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:
  • A summer eight-week paid internship with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization.
  • The week-long, all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 13-18, 2014. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.
Please feel free to share this e mail about the program to your affiliates, and any high school juniors and seniors you think would be good candidates for the program.  The San Francisco and East Bay Student Leaders® program is open to high school juniors and seniors in the following counties: San Francisco, Marin, Alameda and Contra Costa.

We appreciate your help spreading the word about the Bank of America Student Leaders Program. Students can apply for the program by going to www.bankofamerica.com/studentleaders. Please note the application opens on October 28, 2013 with a deadline of January 31, 2014.
