High School Students Doubtful about Future Careers

Everyday, Californians struggle to find and keep jobs in today’s languishing economy. For the high school students who are about to make decisions that will impact the rest of their lives, watching their parents, friends and teachers lose their jobs has created a sense of doubt about their future.

In the video above, VoiceWaves interviewed four seniors at Wilson High School and asked them how they saw themselves fitting into today’s economy.

All of those interviewed were concerned about their future career path and job prospects.

Planning Commission Hearing/ Final Vote on the Housing Element

The planning commission will hear from staff on edits made in conjunction with the State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) on the Housing Element and will vote on its final recommendations that it will send to the City Council.

Jobs and Housing Panel
Monday, December 9th @5pm-7.30, LBCC (Room T1200, located at 4901 E. Carson)
Over 15 local non-profits have invited county-wide experts on jobs and housing policy to join us in Long Beach and address these two critical issues as they pertain to our city.  The panel is moderated by Darick Simpson, Executive Director of LBCAP.  Panelists include: professors and policy experts, the Director of the Rent Escrow Account Program in LA, and resident advocates.

Long Beach City Council Housing Element Study Session
Tuesday, December 10th @3.30pm
The council voted to hold a study session on the Housing Element with presentations from staff and community groups.  The study session will be 90 minutes.

Worker Retention & Labor Peace at City Council

Move Tourism Forward! The City Council has the opportunity to vote for two critical policies: a Worker Retention Ordinance and a Labor Peace Agreement that will affect the Long Beach Airport & Convention Center. We need everyone to come together to ensure both policies move forward and improve the job standards for tourism workers!

Roosevelt Busing Campaign

Parents and community members are asking the Long Beach Unified School District Board to provide funds for a bus for the children that have to now walk to a temporarily relocated Roosevelt Elementary School. They will be hosting a walkathon on January 8th to raise funds to help cover bus passes and advocating to the schools. Organizations can also participate by submitting a letter on their organizations behalf in support of the students. Working closely with the Executive Director (ED) and Organizing Director, the Organizing & Policy Director plays a key role in providing overall leadership to CFJ’s campaign strategy and is responsible for the strategic direction of our Long Beach, Fresno, CQE and Alliance for Educational Justice (AEJ) work. This position supervises three staff, shares oversight of our organizing work with the Organizing Director, and reports directly to the ED.
