The Word From Mitch

It's Mitch!Wishing You TRUE Success!

What is success? Perhaps a more relevant question would be "What is success, to you?" So often we're told by modern-world standards that success is about being the biggest, richest, busiest--having the biggest house, the most money, the busiest, most hectic schedule.

I would contend that this needs reinterpreting. It's all too tempting to be lured by the popular idea of success as being about a frantic, materialistic existence, always striving to "get something more". But is that really what's most important to you?

Most people, when faced with life-threatening events, find that their "normal" ideas of "success" quickly lose any appeal whatsoever. In those moments, we realize that the things that are truly important--family and friends, peace of mind, our health--completely eclipse our more materialistic ambitions.

We find that the true magic, and the true wealth and success of our lives, lie in the human heart, in a simple moment of appreciation for what we have, not in our bank accounts or busy schedules or chasing the "next big thing". It's incredibly valuable to take a moment to simply stop--pause, and get off the "chasing success" bandwagon--to reflect on the deeper and truer values of a successful life. As Clarence wrote to George Bailey, "Remember, no man is a failure who has friends!" Be sure to stop to appreciate a single moment and consider the real magic of success in your life today.
"Don't aim at success — the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued."

Tyroni's Update

TyronisAs many of you will know, Tyroni's Italian Cafe in Bartonville has been a regular performance spot for me for the past nine years. Starting this month, we'll be making some changes in my schedule there. Rather than the same monthly spot I've been doing for some time, I'll be appearing on special-event nights that will be announced through the Tyroni's website and mailing list.  I'll also be announcing my dates there on my blog, Facebook page, and other social media. Stay tuned for further updates... And read below for a special CONTEST for new restaurant promotions...

Resturant Contest!
Would you like to wow your friends by winning an astounding free magic show from yours truly? I'm currently seeking to develop relationships with a couple of new restaurants for regular close up magic performances and in-house promotions. And you can help! I do have a few candidate restaurants that I'm talking with now, but I'm looking for other ideas as well.

Here's the Contest:
Do you know someone who owns a restaurant that would like to dramatically increase their repeat business? Or can you simply think of a restaurant where you'd like to see me perform?  If your suggestion turns into a regular performance spot for me, I'll treat you and your friends to an unforgettable free close up magic show. To get all the details and learn how you can win that free show, use this link: LEARN MORE.
 In The News...
Have you been catching my monthly appearances on WEEK-TV 25's morning news program, News 25 Today with Garry Moore and Gina Morss? I'm a regular guest the third Thursday of every month, usually around 5:50 AM. We have a lot of fun with my magic and sharing a few thought provoking "magical thoughts" as well.
(Here's one of my past interviews.)
Article: The Magic of Mindfulness
Mindfulness practices and meditation have recently become quite popular for stress relief and a variety of other health-related benefits. Mindfulness simply means the practice of paying attention to the experience of the present moment. Being mindful can simply entail stepping back mentally and noticing the specific elements of your present moment experience, paying attention to thoughts, feelings, sensations, and other aspects of present moment awareness.  (As opposed to getting lost in mind wandering and being caught up in a focus on past, future, worry, anxiety, judgement, guilt, and other negative mental and emotional states.)

The magic of mindfulness practice is that it allows us to fully appreciate whatever we are experiencing right this moment, and brings peace of mind and a much healthier state.  While this might seem a bit abstract, it also has some very practical applications as well.
A Call to Magic
Over the past several weeks, I've used a form of mindfulness meditation to significantly reduce and manage some rather severe flu symptoms...

Recipe of the Month:  Sweet Potato and Peanut Bisque

This is a really tasty soup that my wife, Kathi, makes fairly regularly, and we just love it.  She sometimes substitutes an equal amount of butternut squash for half the sweet potatoes.

2 large sweet potatoes
2 t. fresh ginger, minced
1 T. canola oil
1 t. ground allspice
1 small yellow onion
1 15 oz can vegetable broth
1 large clove garlic
½ cup smooth natural peanut butter
3 cups tomato juice
1 4 oz can green chilies, hot
Freshly ground pepper
Chopped fresh cilantro

Prick sweet potatoes and bake in a 350° oven until cooked.  Cool.
Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.  Add onion and cook, stirring, until just beginning to brown, 2 – 4 min.  Add garlic and cook, stirring for a minute more.  Stir in tomato juice, green chilies, ginger and allspice.  Adjust the heat so the mixture boils gently; cook for 10 min.  Meanwhile, peel sweet potatoes and chop into bite-size pieces.  Add half to the pot.  Place the other half in a food processor or blend along with broth and peanut butter. Puree until completely smooth.  Add the puree to the pot and stir well to combine.  Thin the bisque with water if desired.  Season with pepper, and heat until hot.  Garnish with cilantro if desired.
