Open Education Developments in Europe

The October issue highlights selected open education developments in Europe.

Fred Mulder describes the rationale behind the European Commission’s Opening up Education initiative and highlights some of the latest developments with the pan-European MOOCs initiative called OpenupEd.

Lorna M. Campbell and Joe Wilson discuss open education developments in Scotland, highlighting in particular two notable initiatives: Open Scotland and the recently launched Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) project.

Davor Orlic describes open education developments in Slovenia through their national initiative called OpeningupSlovenia (launched in Ljubljana during OCWC Global Conference). Following on these national developments, on September 30th 2014, the UNESCO Chair on Open Technologies for Open Educational Resources and Open Learning was established in Slovenia.

Reminder: Open Education Global Conference 2015: Call for Proposals is Open!
The Open Education Consortium and Athabasca University, organizers of the Open Education Global Conference 2015, invite proposals for conference sessions. The conference will take place in the town of Banff, located in the world-renowned Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada from 22-24 April 2015.
The theme of the Open Education Global Conference 2015 is Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Selected papers from the Open Education Global Conference 2015 will be published by Open Praxis. Open Praxis is a peer-reviewed open access scholarly journal focusing on research and innovation in open, distance and flexible education, published by the International Council for Open and Distance Education – ICDE. Reminder: Call for Proposals to Host Open Education Global Conference 2016 is Open!
The Open Education Global Conference is a meeting place for those involved with or interested in the Open Education movement and its impact on global education.

Conference participants hear from global thought leaders in open education, learn about new initiatives and developments, and discuss issues important to the movement. If you are interested in being considered for hosting Open Education Global Conference 2016 please download the application forms through the following link

Reminder: Open MOOCs now open for registration
The Consortium has partnered with edX to offer our members the opportunity to develop Openly licensed MOOCs based on existing OER.

The first of these Open MOOCs started on 20th October 2014. In addition, two Open MOOCs (scheduled to start in November 2014) are available for registration under the Consortium's area on edX: https://www.edx.org/school/oecx.

We will be adding additional courses throughout the year, so check back often. For more information on the partnership with edX, please see the June 2014 newsletter, or contact any staff member. 
Kaplan University announces the opening of the Open College at Kaplan University (OC@KU) and partners with the Open Education Consortium
Kaplan University announced the opening of the Open College at Kaplan University (OC@KU) a new, flexible and highly affordable collegiate model that supports formal and informal learning as part of degree attainment. To that end, OC@KU has partnered with the Open Education Consortium (OEC) and StraighterLine. Students taking courses through OEC or StraighterLine can apply up to 75% of these learnings toward the bachelor’s program.

2015 Open Education Awards for Excellence: Call for Nominations is Open

The Open Education Awards for Excellence provide annual recognition to outstanding contributions in the Open Education Consortium community. These awards recognize distinctive open education sites, technological innovations, notable open courses, and exemplary leaders in Open Education worldwide. The awards are announced each year at the Open Education Global Conference.

Note: This year the name of the awards has changed to better fit the new look of the Consortium, from “Awards for OpenCourseWare Excellence” to “Open Education Awards for Excellence”.  New award categories are introduced maximizing the opportunities for nominations and extending the range and variety of the awards.

Open Education Consortium: 2nd Quarterly Membership Meeting: Thank you for your Participation

The Open Education Consortium (OEC) organized its second quarterly membership meetings on September 17 & 18. The Meetings provide a venue for members to learn about the Consortium’s and its members’ activities, interact with open education professionals from around the world, discuss topics of common interest and get feedback and input from other members.
