Handmade books photoshoot

Book photo and artist photo

My handmade books played the starring role this summer in a photoshoot with Mary Clark of psalm27creative. She has a passion for documenting artists at work, so we spent a day together in my studio and at two outdoor settings in Nashville.

Mary Clark captured the details of my work and the process of creating a custom wedding guest book, and she has shared everything at her inspiring website. I've been using these new photos throughout my Etsy shop and website, but there are so many great images, that I hope you'll take a closer look. You can visit Mary Clark's blog to see our outdoor photos and images from the studio.

Handmade & Bound festival

Brown Dog Bindery photo

Handmade & Bound Nashville's first book arts festival returns for its second year on October 6, promising to again pack the halls of Watkins College with beautiful handmade books, papers, prints, and zines.

That the city has this festival is truly special. The event features numerous demonstrations, a gallery show, and many more bookmakers and printers than last year. The festival begins with a community book sculpture event on Thursday, Oct. 4. The gallery opening reception follows on Friday night. The festival runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. I hope you'll stop by my booth to say hello!

New books on Etsy

Photo album photo

Visit my Etsy shop to see my newest handmade books. You'll likely see product photos taken by Mary Clark, and I'm proud to feature and an accordion book inspired by the high school geometry class where I first met my husband. And I can help you get an early start on holiday shopping and decorating with a new set of book ornaments. This is the first time they've been listed in my shop.

Upcoming bookbinding classes

I've been teaching classes nonstop this year, and the fall will be no different. In the next few months, I'll be teaching four types of classes. Some are brief, one-day workshops, and others will be in-depth, multi-week classes. Details follow below, with links to online registration for each.

Leather journals, Italian Long Stitch

Traditional leather bookbinding with a contemporary twist
When: Saturday, October 13; 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Where: Watkins College, 2298 Rosa Parks Blvd., Nashville
Cost: $45, plus $20 materials fee.
Description:
Learn to bind a soft-cover leather book that can be used as a journal, a sketchbook, or a photo album. Using the Italian Longstitch style, a historical binding that dates to 14th Century Europe, each student will create a book with a leather cover that features exposed, decorative stitching on its spine and pages that lay completely flat when open. Students will use leather for the book cover and have the option to include interesting contemporary papers inside. No previous bookbinding experience is required, and all materials and tools will be provided.

Miniature notebooks

Make Four Fast Books
When: 3 to 3:50 p.m., Saturday, October 20
Where: The Offices of Emma, 9 Lea Ave., Nashville
Cost: $10
Description:
This introduction to bookbinding will teach you how to create four small softcover notebooks — all in 50 minutes. You'll learn variations of the traditional Japanese Stab Binding and the basic techniques of bookbinding, including tearing paper by hand, working with sewing templates, and stitching decorative patterns. We will be using high-quality handmade and decorative papers for the covers of the books and colorful waxed linen thread for the binding. You will leave the class with multiple pocket-sized notebooks, and the skills to create more handbound books in the future. No previous bookbinding or art experience is required. All tools and materials will be provided.
Click here to register. This class is part of The Skillery EXPO, a one-day event with eight workshops. Learn more about all the classes on my blog.

Photo albums

Binding handmade photo albums
When: Saturday, Oct. 27 - Saturday, Nov. 17 (4 weeks) 1 to 5 p.m.
Where: Watkins College, 2298 Rosa Parks Blvd., Nashville
Cost: $125, plus $35 materials fee.
Description:
Learn to make several styles of handbound photo albums to preserve and proudly display your favorite photographs. These books will be more unique and meaningful than a typical store-bought album and will give you a reason to finally print those photos that have been collecting digital dust on your computer. Using archival materials, this class will cover three hardcover binding styles: the accordion, the Coptic, and the Japanese stab binding. No previous bookbinding experience is required, and all materials and tools will be provided.

Ornament books

Create miniature book holiday ornaments
When: Monday, Dec. 3, 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Dandelion Salon, 1117 Porter Road, Nashville
Cost: $35
Description:
Create eye-catching miniature book Christmas ornaments in this introductory bookbinding class. We’ll make sculptural books with surprising folded structures and festive hardcover books that can decorate your tree. This class explains the fundamentals of bookbinding, including proper techniques for folding, stitching, and gluing, as well as varied binding styles using high-quality decorative materials and traditional binding tools. One book will be bound in a lotus style that can hang on your tree in two different shapes: folded closed into a neat square, or opened into a three-dimensional star.

The other book will be a traditional hardcover book with blank pages, perfect for writing holiday memories to be remembered each year as you decorate your tree. You will leave the class with two handbound ornament books, and the skills to create more handbound books in the future. In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, your involvement in this workshop will also benefit a local non-profit organization, Thistle Farms, in which women who have survived lives of prostitution and addiction support themselves by creating handmade paper and natural bath and body products. Your participation allows me to teach a free class at Thistle Farms.
