August 2010

This month is the heart of summer. Visiting the beach. Going to baseball games and taking long walks.

It's been a good one so far, but hopefully the best lies ahead.

Graham crackers. Marshmallow. Chocolate. Add a campfire or an outdoor grill and you've got the delicious makings for s'mores. This is the month to indulge. August is National S'mores Month and the 10th is National S'mores Day. Time to get ready! If you'd like to take things up a notch, look at these six s'more upgrades. And check out the comments for more. Nutella and gingersnaps anyone?

Two pieces of pending federal legislation [Improving Nutrition for America's Children Act (H.R. 5504) and the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (S.3307) would help make sure that children receive healthy meals regardless of income. Contact your Senator or Representative to find out more.

Those of you who love to knit and like to plan ahead, may be thinking about buying some yarn for the fall and winter.
Lady Dye Fiber Arts & Design's Etsy Shop is based in Massachusetts and has some beautiful yarns that are dyed naturally using items like food coloring, kool aide, fruits, vegetables, teas, coffees, beets, and tumeric. How creative!

The non-profit organization Cleaning For A Reason offers much needed help to women who are undergoing cancer treatment. Patients matched within the program receive four free housecleanings, one a month for four months. The demand far exceeds their ability to serve, so they are seeking sponsors and donations.

La Tartine Gourmande is one of my favorite blogs.  Béa has the most beautiful pictures, recipes, and stories. In a new post, she brings us along for an afternoon at Robinson's Farm in Hardwick, Massachusetts.

That's it for now. Enjoy the rest of August!
