For those of you that have already given, THANK YOU! If you haven’t given yet, would you take minute to consider how YOU can help move BST forward?
In our first 150 years, we, at Berkeley School of Theology, have depended upon God’s steadfast love and faithful presence for over six generations (Ps. 100:5) and the help of students, faculty, administrators, alums, friends, and generous supporters like you. Moving forward, the next 150 years promise to be even more exciting and challenging than years gone by.
This summer we’re busy preparing not only for students to return to campus this fall after three long years of being apart, but also for our 150th Anniversary Celebration and Alumni Gathering, the weekend of October 21-22, 2022.
We have an exciting array of investment possibilities to help BST prepare for the future and for our 150th Celebration. We invite you to prayerfully consider financially supporting the following opportunities by making a generous gift before June 30th to help fund:
Scholarships to enhance the largest recruitment momentum we’ve had in years
Three new faculty hires in the coming year to enhance teaching and learning
The inaugural Center for Truth, Racial Healing and Restorative Justice
The J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Endowed Chair of Theology in the Public Square
Refinishing the grand front doors of the historic Julia Morgan Hall and Chapel
Securing our campus, parking lot, and gardens with decorative wrought iron gating
The 150th Anniversary Celebration and Alumni Gathering
Make your tax-deductible donation today and thank you for your steadfast support that ensures BST will continue to move forward in creating leaders of Christian faith, hope, justice and reconciliation for many years to come.
If you prefer to give via check you can make it out to Berkeley School of Theology and put “Moving Forward” in the memo line. Please mail it to BST 2606 Dwight Way, Berkeley, CA 94704.
BST Awarded $1M grant from
Lily Foundation, Inc.
BST received exciting news on June 24 from Lilly Endowment, Inc., that we were selected through its Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative to receive $1M for use over the next five years to enhance the training of church leaders for today and into the future. In the first phase of the three-phase Pathways initiative, 234 schools received assessment and planning grants of up to $50,000 to identify, prioritize and design programs to address their most pressing challenges. In a competitive second phase, theological schools were then invited to submit proposals for grants of up to $1 million to implement their plans. These latest second phase implementation grants, which total more than $20 million, range from $690,999 to $1 million. Combined with previous awards, the Endowment has now awarded phase two implementation grants to 93 U.S. theological schools and 12 Canadian theological schools. All are accredited by the Association for Theological Schools.
The grant will help BST develop a strong pipeline of underserved students coming from a variety of cultural communities, most with no formal theological training, to find a pathway to ministry that is fast-track and affordable. BST will work even more closely with denominational leaders, regional ministers, and other ABCUSA associate groups, to become co-creators with them in the denomination’s efforts to grow more interculturally proficient pastors and lay ministry leaders. We are truly grateful to Lilly Endowment, Inc, for its generous gift to BST to help churches, pastors, and leaders better impact their worlds as they fulfill their various callings.
On July 1, 2022 BST welcomes two new faculty members, Dr. Eric J. Sias and Dr. Laura Jean Torgerson. Both have recently graduated from the Graduate Theological Union (’22) with PhD’s in biblical studies. Dr. Sias will enter as Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies and Director of Latina/o Programing and Dr. Torgerson as Assistant Professor of New Testament. Both are bi-lingual, English-Spanish, and will help us move our Spanish speaking program(s) forward as well as teach in the English speaking classroom.
Dr. Sias has been involved with BST’s Latina/o programing from its inception and has taught as an adjunct for BST for more than five years while completing his PhD work at GTU. Dr. Torgerson comes to us as a Louisville Institute Post-Doctorate Teaching Fellow with a two-year contract.
We look forward to welcoming Drs. Sias and Torgerson to the BST faculty!
Newly Installed Gates and Fences Secure BST’s Campus
Over the last month, BST has installed gates and fencing to help secure the BST campus. Everything has been designed to specially match the Julia Morgan architecture that the historic BST campus showcases, while also making sure that faculty, staff, students, tenants, including elementary school children on campus, and visitors remain secure while the environment around campus continues to change.
Congratulations to BST Alum
Rev. Kwee Thay Lar Say on her ordination!
On June 4th, 2022 BST Alum Rev. Kwee Thay Lar Say (MCL, MDiv ‘19) was ordained at Karen Christian Fellowship in Manteca, CA. BST is so proud of Kwee and her great accomplishment as she continues in ministry to impact the world.
