  Fall Newsletter 2018

It’s been a busy time at Bridges to Learning and the schools we support in Vietnam.  Thank you for your support of the organization as we work to help the children who are in desperate need.

In this newsletter, we have lots of updates:

  • Fundraising alerts

  • Holiday Wine Tasting Event: November 15th!

  • School News, including a special message from the Anh Linh School Principal

  • Facebook and Instagram update

  • 3M A3tion Group Fundraising for B2L

  • Delectable Dinners

Year end is a huge fundraising time for B2L, so you will see a lot of communications from us over the next several weeks. Reminders for our Wine Tasting event, and  special fundraising for a new computer room for Anh Linh, and general needs for both our schools. Hopefully it will not be too overwhelming, and you’ll skip over those you are not interested in. We do not expect you to participate in every event or donate in every campaign. But please consider making a donation, or sponsoring a child during this season of kindness and light, as we give hope to the children we support in Vietnam.

School News

So many wonderful things are happening at the Anh Linh Free School and Viet Anh Primary Schools, it would be tough to put them all in the newsletter, but here are a few highlights.

Graduates Heading to College!

Description: Students enter college

Five students graduated from high school in the spring and entered the economic and accounting college in 2018-2019. Their achievement is extraordinary, given their background and the competitiveness of college in Vietnam. We are happy they worked hard and received a good education and support from Anh Linh school and Bridges to Learning. We congratulate them on their success and wish them the best as they continue their education.

After finishing middle school at Anh Linh, students can continue learning in public high school with scholarships from Anh Linh. Currently there are 30 students in high school and 13 students in college.

In this school year, all 15 secondary students an Anh Linh are continuing into high school, except one who is moving into vocational training -- he wants to be a baker.

In addition, six students left Anh Linh in grades 10 or 11 for vocational training. After one year of training, they will be bakers and chefs. The education they received at Anh Linh prepared them for the training.

However, 25 primary and secondary students did not return to Anh Linh school for the 2018-2019 year. Some of the primary students returned to their hometown, some secondary students got jobs to support their families.

Secondary School Expansion!

Thanks to a gift from a benefactor Anh Linh school  purchased more than 100 square meters  next to the secondary school. The land will allow for a three story addition to the school. The plans include a library, a science laboratory, and a computer room.

Currently, the secondary school is smaller than the primary school so the additional classroom space will provide more opportunities for student learning. Construction started in September, with a planned completion in the spring. Construction of the building is financed by school funds and help from people like us!  We are excited to be part of this long awaited expansion.

Mid-Autumn Festival!

As a special experience, the children celebrated the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival in the city center. Anh Linh kids won first prizes for the best decorated lantern and the best painted picture. Some girls in eighth grade participated in performing arts with a traditional Vietnamese dance.

Viet Anh Celebrates the 1st Day of School!

Teachers welcomed the students to their first day of school at Viet Anh primary school with processions, speakers, music, and dance. The oldest students presented the first grade students with a balloon, and walked them into the school to start the year. What a great start to their education!

Special Message from Sr. Teresa Mai Kim Dung!

On August 21st, we received this note from the principal of Anh Linh School:

Over the past 28 years, the Anh Linh Love School can develop as today thanks to the support of so many kindness people. You are always a source of strength to encourage us carry out our educational mission. We can’t help the children without your support. We tell you all our hope, all our dream, all our desire in order to you accompany with us to help the poor children have a joy in learning now and have a  brighter future.

THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN! ON BEHALF OF THE POOR STUDENTS, WE EXPRESS OUR DEEPEST GRATITUDE TO ALL OF YOU. WE WISH YOU ALWAYS RECEIVE BLESSINGS, PEACE AND HAPPINESS IN YOUR LIFE.”

3M A3tion Group Fundraisers

The Crazy Rich Asians movie was the headliner at the 3M A3tion Group’s fundraiser for Bridges to Learning, and Theater Mu in early September.  It was a special treat when we learned that the very talented jazz singer in the movie, Jasmine Chen, shared 3M's A3tion group wonderful fundraising event on Facebook.

Thank you to Alamo Drafthouse in Woodbury for hosting the event, to Teresa Wu and her team for organizing it and making it so much fun, and to everyone who donated to the event. Special thanks to 3M for matching the donations!

The A3CTION group also put on a silent auction at 3M to raise additional funds for Bridges to Learning.  We feel blessed by their efforts and support and hope this is the beginning of a long and rewarding relationship for everyone.

Great dining, Great cause!

Always popular at Bridges to Learning fund-raising events are the delicious dinners, hosted by local chefs, or our own supporters. Thank you to everyone who purchased a seat, bid on an entire dinner or hosted a dinner, because your generosity (and good taste!) help us live our mission of educating and loving poor and at-risk  kids in Vietnam.

There were five dinners all together:  Kim Anh Tong and Jon Cohen hosted two Vietnamese dinners that their guests are still talking about!

Celeste and Bob Rekieta invited 8 people to join then for an in-home chef prepared meal with everything to make that dinner spectacular.

John and Barbara Sorich shared their Greek cooking heritage with lucky guests who indulged in wonderful authentic Greek food.

Bob Mac Murdo and Jerri Hirsch put on a Southern Barbeque that was delicious and FILLING!

And as always, thank you to Joe Kotnik from Worldwide Cellars for providing us with great wine.
